does anyone use this for breathlessness? It does say in the leaflet not to use if you have copd or if you have a breathless ness problem and yet I’m reading you can! Confused!!

the trick is not to read the leaflet, Oramorph in a very low dose is a standard treatment for breathlessness as it relaxes the chest muscles. At a high dose it can relax the muscles too much so go with what your GP has prescribed. I have COPD and it helps me I’m on 1.25 ml every 4 hours as required

So confusing isn't it?! Hi Angie, I take Oramorph and find that it helps no end. I use it mainly when I go out, as I have developed a bit of anxiety about leaving the house. I find it relaxes me enough (but not too much!) to be able to breathe through the anxiety instead of getting het-up, which then of course makes your breathing worse!

I was very apprehensive to begin with due to it being a morphine derivative, worried I may be "out of it" or become addicted, but no such.

It's another tool for us, and let's face it we need a full armour!

Good luck xx

You are so right Leo60 I have had the most awful December and January, coughing, clear sputum just feeling can’t take one step in front of the other as severely breathless, I have ambulatory oxygen of 1 litre but I have had to use it so much more! I have had the community doctor and nurses out to me and done bloods and other tests and everything normal, next step is back to respiratory or the consultant but I have oramorph for severe fractures due to osteoporosis! My husband has been very ill for the last 6 months so I have been running here there and everywhere, hospitals and doctors so as I’m driving was afraid to take the oramorph. I don’t drink as such but I do enjoy a very small glass of wine with a meal, is this acceptable?

I'm allergic to morphine so was prescribed oxycodone which has the same effect. I find it helps. 1.25 mls 3xday then 2mls at bedtime. I prefer the liquid as you can adjust the dose to suit the circumstances.

Hi I was advised to take it when in hospital. And then at home. I felt it made my heart beat fast. But only taking half of teaspoon. Don't know if that was enough? Do you take it every day? I am on oxygen 1litre but don't get out much. How do you get on in driving with oxygen?

angie26 profile image
angie26 in reply to_9carole

Yesterday was my first day so I was a bit scared to find I had those symptoms, I’m going to stick with the 2.5 from now on, the reason I have it is I have very painful fractures due to osteoporosis and would take it periodically, I then read about it being used for breathlessness and started it for that, I am on 1 - 3 L ambulatory oxygen but December and January were awful, continual coughing and terrible clear sticky phlegm and I became so breathless as a result, had blood tests etc, no raised inflammatory markers all tests normal, waiting to see respiratory, I read the nhs article about using the Oramorph for breathlessness and thought I’d try it, it has helped a bit but when I get the dose right etc. hopefully I can breathe easier. I spent the last 6 months caring for my husband and I think I overdid it!!!

Oh you have been up against it, poor you. The leaflet says, I think, something like try it to see how it affects you before you drive. I have never had a problem, but we are all different! It does say to avoid alcohol with it, but I don't think a small glass of wine would be a problem.

All the best, Laurie xx

I have severe COPD and health anxiety. My Respiratory team prescribed 1.25ml of OraMorph 4 times a day xx.Sheila

I have just started, my first day and hadn’t realised to only take the 2.5 measure and took the 5ml 3 times the first day and 1 of the 2.5 I was awake at 2am and couldn’t get back to sleep had a weird dream too, I weighed it up and decided that my body was asking for it so I eventually took a 1.25 measure and did get back to sleep! was that withdrawal as I was taking the the large dose? I was quite scared!!

I use the syringe as I was guessing and taking a sip from the bottle. My nurse saw me and told me that was dangerous and I must use the syringe for correct dose. I now take 1.25ml via the syringe 4 times a day xx.Sheila 👍

Used for a while, good results, one ONLY massive side effect: very strong CONSTIPATION, never anymore.

But is worth a try, your case could be different.

That's weird as that was what they were giving my mother in the hospital. She had copd and cancer. Your best bet is to ask your pharmacist 😉

I have COPD and use it for breathlessnes and anxiety and take a 2ml dose up to 3 times a day. It certainly helps. You' ll see that some folk take more than that.

My GP put me on Oramorph for breakthrough pain as I have fibromyalgia and Osteoarthritis. But I also have Bronchiectasis and I can take 2.5ml every 4 hours for breathlessness. I find that one 2.5ml dose is usually enough to help Me when I'm really struggling. I hope this helps you too sweetheart xx

angie26 profile image
angie26 in reply tocazzabeansprout

Thank you so much, I too have bronchiectasis and I think that was the cause of my illness in the last two months. If you’re not taking it all the time do you feel any withdrawal?

Mrbojangles profile image
Mrbojangles

be careful it can be very addictive and causes weird side effects.

I tried scratching my thighs off causing bleeding, had to cut my nails.

Good for pain but in small doses.

I’m off it for good and switched to oxycodine via a syringe.

angie26 profile image
angie26 in reply toMrbojangles

Thanks for that, I definitely felt I had a weird episode although most say in small doses it’s not addictive.

corriena profile image
corriena in reply toangie26

It is still adictive but as long as you keep to a low dose and see your gp if you have any strange affects or the oramorph dosent seem to be working as well. Never increase your dose 😊
