Asthma and BP medication

I was wondering if anyone noticed increase problems when taking BP meds. I have been on Lisinopril-Mepha 5mg since October 2021. At first I didn't connect anything while I am a chronic asthmatic and I thought it was just that as my breathing got bad even on short walks. Now over the last year it as got a lot worse with so much phlegm that I can barely walk 100meters without being out of breath. I am going to the lung doctor and I am currently having different tests. I was just wondering as this all started after taking the meds. Thanks for any info.

Sorry I can't help, but I shall be interested in any replies you get, as my BP is not stable at the moment and I'm waiting for test results from the hospital before my GP can discuss what's going on.

Hi Lydel, You could well be right with having side effects from Lisinopril. When you look at the "side effects that don't hapen much" section. One of them being: signs of anemia (low red blood cells; e.g., dizziness, pale skin, unusual tiredness or weakness, shortness of breath).

This was one of the first meds I was given years ago which gave me a terrible cough that took me over a year to get rid of. I have been on a merry go round to find the right medication and finally settled on Bisopralol. If its not right get your gp to change it x

There are certain blood pressure medications that shouldn’t be used if you are asthmatic. I know Bisoprolol is one as I was changed over to Amlodipine. Ask your GP as Lisinopril May be one that should be avoided.

I’m taking Losartan. I’ve definitely noticed my poor breathing is even worse, but it seems to be breathlessness rather than wheeze, if that makes sense. Like you, I can hardly walk at all! I’ve now changed my diet & managed to reduce to half the dose, & do feel my breathing has improved. Am hoping to reduce further & then get off it altogether. They won’t give me bisopralol & I can’t tolerate amlodipine 🤷‍♀️

My blood pressure and my asthma are very linked. My asthma seems to be the main cause of my high blood pressure.

Before I was diagnosed with asthma they mistakenly though I had cardio issues. The symptoms can be rather similar.

Experimenting with changing your blood pressure medicines is sensible, it took them a lot of goes before they got the correct combination of blood pressure meds for me and my asthma.

General beta blockers, if you are on them, are bad for asthma, cardio selective beta blockers are better, but still not perfect.

Not what you're looking for?
