unwell

I have known that i have COPD and have recently found out that i have Emphysema as well.

In my working life my jobs have included working on the railways as a fireman in the steam age, and working in engineering until i retired and up until 2010 i smoked as well.

With in the last 2 months i have been extremely unwell to the point that on a couple of occasions i honestly thought i was going to DIE.

Luckily i met with one of the most experienced chief nurses that i could ever wish to meet.

With her help i was contacted to a community hub whose nurses came to see me straight away, and Boy did they help me to get on top of my illness, so it is with great thanks to them that i think that i am still here to day.

There is a lot more that i could say but i think that i have said enough for now.

T👍hanks all

A very warm welcome to the forum Mick and hope you’re having a good day. Emphysema comes under the umbrella of COPD as does chronic bronchitis and some asthma’s. It’s quite a shock to be diagnosed and to try and think about the future so I’m pleased you received the wonderful help and support you did.

My husband has COPD (chronic bronchitis) and was diagnosed in 2010. He also has heart problems.

Good to meet you. Take care xxx

Hello 👋 and welcome 😊 to our friendly forum. In England our system for health is very different to yours. Referral from general practitioner (doc) then you have care from the local respiratory team and or referral to hospital consultant and his team.

Physiotherapist for breathing techniques and exercises, all available online.

Stay in touch as we can moan, have our say and help each other with non medical advice and most importantly our experiences.

Best wishes. Dawn.xx

Hi and welcome to the forum. My understanding is that emphysema falls under COPD banner. So in effect you haven’t been diagnosed with something else as well as COPD. Just been told what illness you actually have. I have come across this before especially on other sites and seems wrong to say a person has both COPD and emphysema (in your case) or bronchitis or occasionally asthma. They all fall under COPD banner.

Is good that you have had a proactive nurse working with you. Have you done a pulmonary rehabilitation course? If not I suggest you ask for this. Is a course where you will learn about managing your lung condition and living well. Plus how to exercise safely.

Hi Mick, I’m glad you got that help to put you on the right track. Your post caught my eye because my beloved dad who is no longer with us (aneurysm in 2012) worked as a steam engine driver for the Manchester Ship Canal, then finished his working life as a railway station man. He smoked too, everyone did then. Your bio really reminded me of him so thank you. He was born 1930.

Hello Mick, You will get much support here. Belonging to this forum helped me reduce worry, isolation and lack of information. It gave me hope that many can live with a lung condition and feel less powerless by taking more control of health. 🤗
