Back in the days of tanners and bobs,When Mothers had patience and Fathers had jobs. When football team families wore hand me down shoes,And T.V gave only two channels to choose.Back in the days of three penny bits, when schools employed nurses to search for your nits. When snowballs were harmless; ice slides were permittedand all of your jumpers were warm and hand knitted.Back in the days of hot ginger beers, when children remained so for more than six years. When children respected what older folks said, and pot was a thing you kept under your bed.Back in the days of Listen with Mother, when neighbours were friendly and talked to each other. When cars were so rare you could play in the street. When Doctors made house calls and Police walked the beat.Back in the days of Milligan's Goons, when butter was butter and songs all had tunes. It was dumplings for dinner and trifle for tea,and your annual break was a day by the sea.Back in the days of Dixon's Dock Green,Crackerjack pens and Lyons ice cream. When children could freely wear National Health glasses, and teachers all stood at the FRONT of their classes.Back in the days of rocking and reeling, when mobiles were things that you hung from the ceiling. When woodwork and pottery got taught in schools, and everyone dreamed of a win on the pools.Back in the days when I was a lad,I can't help but smile for the fun that I had.Hopscotch and roller skates; snowballs to lob.Back in the days of tanners and bobs

We also took weather like today in our stride.
I can relate to a lot of that. Great poem!
thank you Iris for finding these quirky poems… it all SOUNDS idyllic…🤔 makes me think about what I’ve missed 😊
That took me down memory lane, some good ones there thanks Iris. Xxx
yes I remember doing that, but we always seemed to do them to one side so they weren’t in the main path. ☺️ Don’t see children out playing much anymore there all busy on the I pads and computer games. Xxx

it’s a great poem. Evokes lots of memories. Thanks Iris. X
Sounds just like my childhood. I fully relate to this. This time of the year when I was a kid the ice was also on the inside of the bedroom windows and I was snuggled inside my little bed with so many additional blankets that I could hardly move. Also my Dad's overcoat thrown on top for good measure . 😁
yes, I remember iceinside my bedroom window. But we survived! God bless you all love Iris x by the way, just enjoying an old film Colour Blind. This is a story written by Catherine Cookson. I used to read many of her books when I was young. X
that poem is awsome so many memories for me lol, my friend and i would on freezing snow night go out with pales of water to ice our slide for next day, best slide in the scheme lol

Beautiful, Lyd. Thank you for sharing!
That is Fabulous xx
What a wonderful poem…very clever. You forgot to mention boys playing conkers and marbles. I went to a lovely school in Surrey and we girls would play hopscotch and something called French Skipping which I loved - it involved a long piece of elastic. If you Google it you’ll see what it is. There was also a fad that came out for ‘clackers’ which were two balls (a bit like snooker balls) on a cord which you sort of clacked together - that fad was rather short lived as I recall.
We always had lunch and then dinner was in the evening…I don’t understand why some people call the evening meal ‘tea’ unless it is mid-afternoon.
I remember playing ball on my own against the house wall, singing Plainsy, clapsy, round the world to backsy. And there was more, all followed with the right actions and hopefully not dropping the ball,!
