MEROPENEM IV FOR PSEUDOMONAS.

CANNOT GET RID OF IT. ALL OTHER IV MEDS HAVE NOT WORKED ALL. YEAR LONG, 4 PIC LINES.. NOW A PORT

INFECTIOUS DISEASE DR TOLD ME THIS DRUG IS ONLY GIVEN IN SERIOUS CASES AS PSEUDOMONAS OFTEN BECOMES RESISTANT TO IT AND IT CANNOT BE USED AGAIN. HOWEVER I HAVE BEEN SICK FOR A YEAR NOW WITH IT.

GREENN IN LUNGS AND SINUS AND COLD CHILLS ETC.

HAVE BRONCHIECTASIS BUT THE PSEDOMONAS AND ASPERGILLUS ARE MAKING ME TOO SICK .

ANY ADVISE? I SEE HIM TOMORROW AND MUST DECIDE WHETHER TO GO ON THIS DRUG FOR 10- 14 DAYS OR NOT.

hi lapis - IV meropenem is commonly used to treat pseudomonas here, I’ve had it at least 6 times in the last 10 years. However (and I don’t understand the science behind this) it’s possible for the lab report to show pseudo as being sensitive to mero, but for it to suddenly not “work”. I don’t think this is common, but I know it’s possible as it happened to me last year. Maybe Hidden can enlighten us, if he’s around.

I’ve had to move to another IV - ceftazidime - which seems fine. I don’t need IV antibiotics all that often, maybe twice a year, as the nebulised antibiotics I take mainly keep the pseudo levels low.

I have aspergillosis too and find it much more of a problem to control than the pseudomonas. It’s a pretty difficult combination we’ve got isn’t it 🤗

Meropenem is frequently used for pseudomonas. Both IV and nebulised. I am wondering if you have a bronchiectasis specialist. Infectious diseases specialists are good in their own field but don't have the training or experience in bronch to be able to treat it. They go after the bug rather than treating the lungs. It is rather extreme to tell you that meropenem is only used in serious cases as it is standard in bronch as you can see from eleanordigby's reply. If you don't have a bronch specualist you need to find one.

I would take their advice Lapis5.ru managing to do yr bronchiectasis self care? It is hard whn so unwell.just a gentle reminder + hope u feel better soon xx
