Black Swans

Went to JCB Rocester, parked looking at one of lakes having our lunch. Black Swans came to see us, very pleased to see all 3 in same area. After taking photos took little food for one on grass, before got to it we’re swamped by seagulls.

Thank you Jean. I have never seen a black swan in real life. Seen hundreds of seagulls though!

I had never seen one, until stopped there for short rest when out on motorbike years ago. There are about 8 lakes, and when spoke to man who looks after them told there are 78 different species of water birds on lakes. It’s nice place to stop, benches overlooking lakes and water fountain, all open to everyone, sometimes there’s ice cream van parked on road. Jean x

That's a beautiful photo. We used to have a black swan on Abberton Reservoir near Colchester, but I haven't seen one for years. Glad yours are still thriving. xxx

Very regal, trying to remember the cathedral/abbey, where the swans come and pull on a bell to be fed.

Thanks. Wells Cathedral white swans pull on bell to be fed, saw them twice about 20 years ago. Jean x

Lovely to see them elsewhere! We have them permanently here in Dawlish in South Devon! I get excited when i see white ones now! Thank you for posting!

Morrison10 profile image
Morrison10 in reply toRobinface

That’s interesting, how long have you had them? Been years since visited Dawlish, don’t think there then. How many, are they breeding? Jean x

Robinface profile image
Robinface in reply toMorrison10

hello Jean, I have lived here nearly 30 years and they have had them since before then! Yes they are breeding and i think at present we have 4 or 5- we lost a young one recently to a muscular problem and a few others have gone to breed else where! Sadly have lost a few to careless dog owners who have allowed their dogs to attack them! Will get a photo next time i walk into town x

Hi, just catching up with earlier posts, about black swans. Good to know that you have them, and breeding. There are only 3 at JCB, never seen them breed, but will post on here if any significant happens. Jean

had a couple of black ones drop in to our kocal flooded salt quarries a few years ago . Had young as well but cannot remember the colour of the babies. Not been there for long time but we were always having strange birds arrive in passing and move on after a few days .
