Help on side effects

Hi there everyone, I was diagnosed with COPD 14 years ago . I have been taking inhalers ever since. In my younger days I was taken off the birth pill due to raised blood pressure, since which time my blood pressure has been treated with varied drugs on and off. Recently I was asked if I would agree to treatment by drugs for my BP which has resulted in a flare up of my COPD symptoms plus other symptoms of muscle pain , urine incontinence , excessive mucus sometimes coloured., my Gps seem to think I am being a pain. The paticular tablets given were prescribed in the past with similar occuring. I wondered if others have had severe reactions with any BP treatment who also have airway conditions? , for years I took the same drug with no problem until I started to get raised uric acid levels which occurs after long term use. Another drug was stopped in general by chemists. So myself and the doctor are struggling to control slightly raised blood pressure to keep the hospital and government satisfied. The tablet causing the worst reaction is Doxasozin. Any ideas or experiences of controlling BP would be much appreciated. Take care in the sun

I was tried on Rampiril but it caused me to have a constant dry cough (dry is unusual for me) so taken off and told sternly to lose weight. After losing three and a half stone it did level off to a manageable level. I have not been prescribed anything since but the BP and the weight are creeping back up.

I take three BP meds to control blood pressure:- Atenolol, Amlodipine and a water pill. No problem with them at all. Hope you find a solution to your problem and soon. You’re definitely not being a pain. Take care Katie. Xxx

Hello Sassy59, I took Atenolol for years and suddenly they stopped them and put them on the allergy list, the other one you mention I get adverse reaction. The water tablet began with B that causes raised uric acid levels after long term use (for me years) plus a hereditary disposition to raised uric acid. I accept the problems are specific to me in some cases but how can we maybe find an alternative ? It sounds like the GP is limited to specific drugs within the NHS prescribing criteria. Its becoming a case of doctors shying away from treating me because its complex.. Anyway thank you for your reply. Hope you are both well.xx

Wishing you well Katie. We’re ok thank you. Xxx

Hi katie. I don’t know that drug. I take candesartan which my cardiac man tells me is to keep my bp down now that I have a pacemaker. I haven’t had any problems with it.

I can't take the one you named either along with not being able to take nurofen and the like . Even a consultant said he had never seen anyone with a severe cough like mine which is made worse by things that irritate the airways. This time I thought I had the virus but tested negative so then stopped the pills, and things slowly returned to normal. Thank you for reply. xx

That's awful for you. I hope that they find one which helps.

I know what you are saying, I am on Doxazocin and now a statin Atorvastin. Also treated for raised BP, but I have had so many problems with skin, insomnia, rashes, muscle weakness, unsteadiness, IBS, cramps, and up passing urine 4 times at night. Which I think is due to Lasix. COPD since 2014 after Asthma from 1983. I thought my muscle weakness was from long Covid, now I am wondering. I was tested for renal deterioration but that seems to be OK?

katieoxo60 in reply toElephantstraw

You have my total understanding, I found I could not tell when I needed to pass water especially at night. I forgot another one my nose was running constantly too. my throat was cracking it was so dry maybe these people who produce these pills should take them their selves to test. The muscle weakness could be the tablets or other things even kidney problems can effect the muscles as can flu. I come from a family of Asthmatics and allergies with Asthma are very common. My sister has loads of skin allergies as does my youngest son. My blood pressure is not that high is yours really high ? Do take care and try to keep tabs on the drugs so you can discuss it with the GP. We are all different and if stopping a drug and using another one works it actually saves the NHS long term on treating side effect damage. Enjoy your day best you can

I commented on Damon's post about Rampiril earlier but forgot to say I do take a powerful diuretic.

Yes, I had problems with Doxasozin, though I can't remember what they were: they were listed side effects. I had problems with every BP lowering tablet in the formulary except for indapamide. So I take that, To bring my BP down further, I also lost about a stone in weight, even though I was already in the healthy weight range for my height. Down from 70 kg to between 62-65 kgs. Still in my healthy weight range.

I have COPD.

Hello Ergendl, like yourself I have tried most Bp tablets was fine until more recently since my COPD treatment commenced in 2008 . I now also take painkillers maybe my body can't cope with all the varied pills or is slowing down with age. They say sometimes lesser doses are needed as we grow older. I am going to try some herbal ones see if they help as my BP is not massively high which i am sure would alter if I could loose a little weight too. Stay cool and enjoy your day.

Good morning katieoxo60. I was diagnosed with severe copd 3years ago and after having a pacemaker my blood pressure was too high. So eventually I have ended up on Doxazosin 4mg 1 in a morning and 1 at tea time and also I am on Trelegy inhaler in a morning and me myself I don't have any problems. Was on 4mg once a day to start with but it's been increased to control my b.p. been on 8 mg now for 9 months. All tablets don't suit everyone. Hope you get something sorted out love. Brian

Hi Brian, thank you for reply . I have ordered some herbal remedy to try today as my body wont allow me to take the varied tablets the NHS provide. Its not just Bp tablets I have similar problem with painkillers. Even certain inhalers its so hard I hate feeling ill from side effects, but as things worsen sometimes you have no choice but take what is given and be ill so to speak. It seems some Drs think I am refusing treatment but allergies are a reason to refuse to take also and not all people have allergies. Interactions can cause reactions too. I have had anapalactic reaction in the past too. Take care in this heat and try to keep cool. Was given a painkilling injection recently and that seems OK.

So sorry you are having so many problems from reactions to medicines. I just think our health service is just becoming an uncaring system that just hands out prescriptions and hopes everything will be ok. I had leg ulcers on my leg from a reaction to tablets years ago and still got the scars. Hope you feel better soon and yes take care in the heat as well. Brian

Hi again Brian I have a scar on my leg from an accident in the garden which was dressed with honey but myself and friends felt it should have been stitched, it took months to heal along with a skin infection in the wound which I had to have antibiotics for. The treatment was supposed to prevent scarring 😊

Yes well as soon as I seen the blisters I stopped taking the tablets. My doctor said nothing just changed the tablets I still have the red marks and the skin is very thin in that area so have to be careful

Hubby has been on Amlodipine for years with no I’ll effects . I do hope you get sorted soon , medication seems to become more of a problem than the actual complaint at times ☹️ Good luck x

katieoxo60 in reply toThepainterswife

Totally agree with you, treatment can cause more problems than the illness

Bingo88 profile image
Bingo88 in reply toThepainterswife

It was Amlodipine that caused blisters on 1 leg for me. Only took them for 2 days. Brian

This is the problem with all medication used for all complaints isn’t it Brian ? what suits one can be detrimental to another 🤦🏻‍♀️ It’s a mine field !

Bingo88 profile image
Bingo88 in reply toThepainterswife

Yes it is love and they all cause a side effect which is then another problem

katieoxo60 profile image
katieoxo60 in reply toBingo88

Sometimes these problems show quickly while others only occur as the drug builds in the system. Glad to hear you only have a scar not a long term illness left from drugs. My first experience of a blood pressure drug was propanonol many years ago there was very little patient info so I was fobbed off and told it could not be the drug current records for this drug say different, so it is possible for facts to change given time. Thank you for further reply have a nice day
