Unexpected bleed : Hi haven't posted... - Lung Conditions C...
Unexpected bleed

Yes it can happen with bronch. Is usually the sign of an exacerbation and self limiting. If you get it a lot ascan to see if there are any compromised blood vessels might help.

Hi Littletpom does that mean an infection x
Yes. A bronch exacerbation is when the bacteria which like to make a home in the fluid in our damaged lungs and airways have a party and breed like mad, making us poorly. I don't like to call it a chest infection because we always have a level of infection lurking there and it reduces our issues to the level of a well person who gets a chest infection. This is why we have to get rid of the mucus every day.

Thank you Littlepom for your help,it's so scary when I cough blood up now I am chesty ,got a month's course of doxycycline ,do you get tired when you have infections
Yes very tired and just having bronch is very drining. We have to pace ourselves and not feel guilty about it.

I'm interested in that statement: "Always a level of infection there" I have not had an exacerbation for three years and am currently feeling fit. Personally, I think everyone is different. Can you direct me to your source where it states we always have a level of infection? I'd be grateful because I was unaware of that after nearly 20 years of bronchiectasis. Thank you.
I have lived with bronch for 69 years. There are always some bacteria lurking in the fluid in the lungs although in such small numbers that they do not cause trouble or show up on lab plates. This is particularly true of our friend pseudomonas. I suggest that you do more reading on bronch or talk to a bronchiectasis specialist rather than challenge the help that I try to give to people.
Yes, we are all different in the way in which the condition affects us but in itself it is fairly consistant.

I did not think I was challenging the help you are offering. I'm sorry you felt that. I'm genuinely interested in your source saying there is always a level of infection. I understand bacteria lurk everywhere but didn't think that necessarily meant infection. I had a pseudomonas exacerbation 12 years ago and it may still be lurking for all I know but it has not caused trouble since. I do have a consultant review coming up on Monday and will ask the question and post the answer .
I think that your definition of an infection is different to mine. Bacteria anywhere are an infection but only cause us trouble if they breed so much that they make us ill and show up on a petrie dish and this is called an exacerbation. Please show this to your consultant in order that they can see exactly what I am saying. I don't understand why you are bothering to talk to me when you obviously doubt what I say.

Yes , I agree, my understanding differs .

So sorry to hear you're not well hope the scan goes ok please keep us updated. Have a good night and take care 😊 Bernadette and Jack 🐕 xxxxxx 🌻🌻
Yes, you should always see you GP or at least let them know particularly if it is a more noticeable amount than just a streak.
Hi Lyla . I have bronchiectasis & often get a bleed . For me it usually means an infection & flare up . I always find it scary despite the reassurance , knowledge & help from the wonderful people on the forum .
Complete rest and an antibiotic is the only thing that cures it for me . Also I come off nebulisers & saline as this only aggravates the bleed more .
If I have a run of flare ups this means I’m not hitting the bug completely & I have IV treatment a few times & found it a great help
When I’m good like now it feels great but I do my physio diligently to try & keep myself as well as possible .
I find gentle exercise like walking also good to clear the lungs
Hope this helps
Thank you, I know it's not nice but it helps to know someone else has bleeds,I wouldn't wish it on anyone they said in hospital 4 years ago it stems from a childhood illness I had when I was 5 bronichol pnumonea and congestion of my lungs .
Same here . Respiratory specialist thinks mine a result of childhood illness , whooping cough or measles & resulting pneumonia . Would be nice to roll years back but we can’t & while it’s not nice we can live with it . The specialist I attend says coughing up blood is always scary
I have no practical advice or help but wanted to wish you well. That must be a worry. Grace
