Hi, I'm new to this site, in my mid-60's with bronchiectasis and an FEV1 of around 40%. I'm just wondering if anyone has experience of being given something like a mild version of oramorph to relieve the discomfort of ongoing dyspnea, or at what stage that becomes possible ? At the moment I have to use eg cocodamol so I'm worried I'm affecting my liver with paracetamol when really it's just the codeine that would provide the relief... ? Thanks for any advice!

Hi and welcome to the site,I'm sorry I can't help with this question but I'm sure someone will be able, please let us know how you are doing and please keep posting. Have a good night and take care 😊 Bernadette and Jack 🐕 xxxxxx 🌻🌻
Hi and welcone, you haven't said anything about inhalers and, if you have them, how effective they are.I was prescribed oramorph about three and a half years ago when I was on the maximum dose of an inhaler regime that had helped. Other inhalers I had previously been prescribed were innefective or made me worse. I have found that the oramorph does help to ease breathlessness along with associated anxiety.
I don't think that there is a particular stage where it becomes appropriate as we are all different but is something you could discuss with your GP.
Hello! I can't help either, just thought I'd say welcome xx
I've taken co codomol for 20 years without any problems. But your doctor can prescribe just codeine if that's what you prefer. I'm now under palliative care and they prescribed morphine sulphate. I'm told on a lower dose it can help breathing. I take it for pain alongside the cocodomol. Give your doc a call and try codeine only.
Thanks for the welcomes! And for your ideas. As for inhalers I'm using Trelegy and Salbutamol, also on the azithromycin regime. But yes I will think about discussing it with my GP. I'm concerned that 'confessing' to using otc codeine however will at some future point mark me down as 'liable to addiction' and then when I really need eg morphine, at a later stage, it will be refused on this basis . But I'm starting to think that times and attitudes have moved on since I first became apprehensive about this.
Hi Maturin371 and welcome. I have bronchiectasis but it is mild and only get short of breath when walking quickly so cant really advise. I would be careful on what you tell your doctor as attitudes from my surgery hasnt moved on. Tell him you have tried it but would like something without the paracetamol. I hope you find something that works for you x
Hmm thanks for that cautionary note! 👍
My gp is on mat leave and the doctor standing in is horrid. I requested prednisilone for the eye, ear, teeth problem I have at the moment and thought he would blow a gasket when i said I had tried it and they worked. I told him I had some left from a previous time and he told me off, honestly the man is out of the dark ages. I am praying that my old gp comes back soon and doesnt leave, heaven forbid I have to deal with this man too often x
Hi! I have just returned from a visit to the transplant clinic and they suggested oramorph for my cough. I'm waiting on a call from the palliative care team to discuss as I've had a bad reaction to post operative morphine before.
