Morning I need advice recently my breathing has become frightening I'm struggling it was all of a sudden I stopped smoking about 4 mths ago 2 months later I just got bad with my breathing I asked my nurse did she think it is because I have stopped smoking and a lot of people have no she said it properly because your Copd has got worse since when does nursing make u so detached to somebody's feelings if a lot of people I have messaged about how they felt after stopping why wouldn't she then say well these people should know and as my nurse dosent smoke how would she know I'm trying to make an effort here I don't need to be knocked down by stupid comments what's wrong with these nurses these days I started after stopping over 3 years of not smoking because she told me after all that time I had got worse but I had already done the damage jeez when they do there training to become nurses do they not learn to be sympathetic I really cannot put up with struggling to breathe everytime I move help

Ask your GP for a flutter valve and you can do breathing exercises it's a great little device and does help. Try not to panic my breathing got worse when I stopped but got better after about five or six months. Stay positive and you will be surprised how much better you start feeling. Please let us know how you get on have a lovely day and take care of yourself 😊 Bernadette xx xx 🌈

Good luck and let us know how it goes. 🤗 Bernadette xx xx 🌈

I haven’t got a lung condition (my daughter does), but when I finally stopped smoking I had a solid 9 months of coughing up revolting gunk, shortness of breath, and exercise intolerance. When I was smoking, I had a little bit of breathlessness when exercising, but that was it - the experience was a real shock to the system, but it made me determined to keep at it. I felt like it gave me some insight as to what my daughter must experience at times, but also a glimpse into my own potential future if I didn’t quit once and for all.

From my own experience, I think it’s going to be difficult to say at this point whether it’s a quitting smoking issue or a case of your COPD changing/worsening, but one thing I can say is that you can’t ‘undo’ years of smoking in 4 months, and if it is related to your smoking, it should start to settle in time. All told, I’d say it took a good year for my lungs to sort themselves out, and that was in someone fortunate enough not to have any underlying respiratory problems.

It's not so much the 4 months it's the way I feel I have obviously stopped before I never had any problems doing so it's scary your trying to help yourself and believe me it's not easy I don't want to think that this is how I'm going to be feeling it's scary and it's going to get worse if my copd is the reason for my abrupt breaching problems I'm hoping it's because I've stopped smoking and it's going to get easier to breath

As suggested make a telephone appointment with your GP to discuss your difficulty breathing and how its affecting you for mobility etc.

If you find you are getting into real trouble during the evening, night time, early hours, at the weekend, don't hesitate to call the 111 service or emergency service.

Take good care and hope you can get something sorted soon.

Thank you I called 111 twice before they just keep u in a bay for hrs on end then tell u to go home my hospital is 30 miles away I can't afford to get a taxi from there first time I got them to get me transport second time they said I dont qualify I do but they just told me to sit outside a and e until late I arranged someone to pick me up

111 service, you don't have to go to the hospital, its the one you ring before it gets to emergency stage. They can then decide based on your symptoms whether to send the paramedics out to you, who will then decide if you should be hospitalised or not.

The paramedics can check you over and you don't always need to go into hospital but they will advise.

Use this service based on the information on the page link provided (above) for the 111 service.

Doctors won't come out for routine queries only telephone appointments at this time. Information regarding 111 service as above.

You could click on the link and just go through the on line form first, at the end of that you will also get advice on what to do next.

The information and guidance is there but its your choice if you use it or not.

Speaking to your Doctor rather than the Nurse you could enquire about using a different inhaler if you think the one you are using is not helping you breathe.

I’ve heard others say the same, that when they stop smoking it gets worse but I can promise you it will eventually get a lot better and then you will wonder why you hadn’t given it up a long time ago. If I still smoked I’m sure I wouldn’t be here now and I didn’t even smoke many.

Only you can do it. I know it takes a lot of willpower but I’m sure you can find it somewhere. I have done it myself so I know what it’s like.
