If you have excess water in your system it is well worth giving them a go. Fluid retention can cause breathing difficulties.

If you take them in a morning, you will go for a couple of hours. The more water you are resting the more often you will go. But, come the afternoon you should be ok.

Thank you I've been given indapamide but after reading NHS website says the water tablets can deplete potassium but their are water tablets that do not also says if your potassium levels get bad A this can be dangerous and British your be given another potassium Meds why not give people the one that dosent do this

Hi there. Potassium levels are not always depleted when taking water tablets. Your GP will check your bloods if you are on them long term.

Eventually you do get used to them

I don't want to keep popping pills all can have awful side effects why can't they invent a pill that does everything u need it to do with no side effects oops that's right dosent exist I hate getting older getting sicker I think the thought of getting a side effect can actually make u worse and I've had side effects in the past so reluctant to take them I'm a scaredy cat now

I understand your reluctance to try them. But, water retention can also be very dangerous. As you have been prescribed water pills you must have water retention. Whether or not you experience side effects remains to be seen.

When a doctor prescribes for a patient he weighs up the benefits of a treatment against the possible adverse effects. Your GP must think that the benefits of taking a water pill exceeds the possible adverse effects.

Potassium deficiency will not happen immediately, so there is no harm in giving it a try to assess for yourself if they help.

I'd agree but when I did have a doctor here he looked at my ankles and knew they had been swelling for several weeks all he said was elevate them so again I contacted docs to get a nurse saying I'll put u on water tablets hmmmmmm so whose right doctor vs nurse

Both are right.

Raising your feet doesn’t always get rid of swelling. I’m assuming you tried it with little or no effect and that is why the nurse decided tablets would be a good idea.

Sometimes, u have to trust yr drs.theyre prescribing to try help u.most people dont get side effects.maybe tomoro, take yr medicines, drink plenty, bananas r rich in potassium.while it seems a pain getting up to loo,the more u move, the beta it is for you x

Itsmeagain1 profile image
Itsmeagain1 in reply toPatk1

That's the problem I don't trust my doctor he doesn't do follow ups he won't check if my potassium levels are OK he has passed me on to nurses and another doctor I don't feel that his that bothered maybe that's wrong I just get that feeling as to taking water tablets I'm struggling to breathe if id have to phone the doctors and I had a side effect I'm not sure if he would come out I want to feel better but I'm scared to take something new I wish he would say I'd put u in a respite hospital take these Meds and if any problems someone's there to help but no one seems to understand that

Patk1 in reply toItsmeagain1

Unfortunately, thats not going to happen.pls try yr meds follow the prescribed doses, eat yr fruit especially bananas, and drink plenty of fluids. Theyre trying to help you, even tho yr not able to see that at present.get the excess fluid out of tum, legs and lungs & u will breathe beta.try stad up,stretch legs ea hr, walk a little it all helps, even tho hard.i also do breathing exercises, just for few minutes,as deep and slow as u can.every little step helps.its not easy, theres no cure, but any little thing of benefit is worth doing.be kind to yrself, try to relax xxxx

Itsmeagain1 in reply toPatk1

Thank you I didn't feel this bad when I was smoking so bit of a kick in the teeth if I'm being honest finding myself crying a lot lately so mental health maybe needs addressing besides I look bad enough with my swollen eyelid which my doctor said would be gone within a couple of weeks it's been 4 mths now and he doesn't seem bothered about me looking horrible if my health dosent improve I am not sure how long the not smoking is going to last as I did it to feel better to breathe better not worse I didn't have swollen ankles before either 😠

I can fully understand your concern about taking diuretics and potassium levels, but sometimes the small risk is worth it.

I have taken high doses of diuretics for a while now, if I don’t,my left leg in particular, looks like an elephants.

It’s like dragging a bag of potatoes and very unpleasant.

I have only once had a issue with low potassium when I was in hosp and taking all sorts of other things.

If nothing else it’s worth a try.

When you elevate your legs the general rule is that legs are at least higher than your hip.

At night I have the bottom of the bed elevated couple of thick pillows will do, I have an electric bed so keep that raised.

For what is worth those are my thoughts but we are all different what works for one may not work for another and always seek medical advise.

Hugs

Thank you I brought myself as a treat for not smoking a electric bed not because I thought I would have to use it for swelling handy though lol my ankles better than they were but it's the sob and pain in my leg that's worrying me maybe I'll try it I just hate the idea of more pills it dosent stop at one I wish it was 1964 and I was 5 and have my life again knowing what I know now and make different mistakes 😊 what say you

As a friend of mine days if hindsight were foresight we’d all be millionaires!

I’ve led a very interesting life and don’t regret one moment of it.
