O2 levels

Is it normal for your O2 levels to drop while sleeping? I've been waking up with massive headaches all week, so the last 2 morning I've taken my O2 test when I wake up. Yesterday it was 91 for around ten minutes and today it was around 93. I've no idea how low they go when I'm asleep. They both recover to a normal level but does take a while. My Emphysema is generally well maintained. Thanks

Hi. I have literally just looked that up about half an hour ago. Like yourself I'm not too good in the morning, sats can be 92/93. Bought a smart watch which measures during the night and it indicates readings in the 80's at times. According to what I've read they shouldn't dip that low but that could be dependent on lung disease. So basically someone's normal could be another's abnormal. Think the best thing would be to speak to your respiratory team, I've got an appointment at the end of the month so will be asking then

Thank you. I think I'm going to have to invest in a smart watch. What do you use?

It was my Apple Watch that flagged up I drop to the low to mid 70s regularly at night. Based on this, I was referred for a sleep study that confirmed it. I was quite lucky in that I didn’t have too long a wait for my sleep study. Definitely worth mentioning to your doctor.

Agree with crashdoll. I’ve had 2 Tosca tests at different times whilst in 5* where I.stop breathing 18.5 times an hour through the night. I can’t see why this couldn’t be done at home if it’s allowed. Sleep study involvement sounds like the way to go.

Good luck

I have recorded 02 when I have been asleep. They have gone as low as 82 - But that is a peak, does not stay so low for long although it can repeat, I went to GP with print outs and not much concern.

If you are waking up with headache and your stats maybe lower than they should be but, that is not a severe symptom - Still if you have headache everyday and you suspect low oxygen levels, worth seeing your GP..

Hello

It sounds like a sleep study might be useful. If you have sleep apnoea, the oxygen can go really down while you sleep. Mine was in the 70s for a lot of the night.

Maybe a cpap machine is the way to go.

Looks like I've got a lot of thinking to do doesn't it. First off i need to see how bad this is before i approach the docs, then I'll see how it goes from there. Thank you everyone. Stay safe

Hi Jimmy,I've had headaches this week, but I think it's due to the thundery weather - I haven't taken my oxygen levels first thing as I like to try and get my lungs going - always sluggish in the morning. I wake up once or twice during the night to go to the loo - don't know if that could be a sign of low oxygen levels.

You need to look into a cpap machine.

Hello, I can’t comment on the levels dropping while sleeping, my problem is the minute I sit down, my levels go down to 89/90. No one can tell me why it drops, I have asthma, but no major problems with it. I see someone has suggested a smart watch, I would agree with that, I’d love to take my own advice, but just can’t wear it all the time. Maybe speak to your asthma nurse about it. Take care.

Hi Jimmy,Regardless of all other advice, I would be getting in touch with your respiratory team or GP for advice. It could be for a number of reasons and we are all different. Take care.
