Hi, My hair started to thin about a year ago. It used to be thick but now a thin pony tail. I'm very concerned and wonder if its linked to medication or something else. Hopefully other members will have some suggestions.

I believe it can be linked to hypothyroid and Vitamin D deficiency. A few years ago my big sister began to lose her eyelashes (she'd already lost her eyebrows due to low thyroid). I read up about it (sorry I cannot remember where) only to find out about the vitamin d deficiency so bought her some high strength ones. Low and behold the eyelashes stopped falling out and sheeven grew some eyebrows.

Coincidentally my hairdresser volunteers with cancer patients at the Hospital who're losing hair or have thinning hair. She told me about something she recommends for hair regrowth so I'll contact her on Monday & let you know.

PS if I don't get back to you please remind me (I'm ill at the moment so not myself).

Hi panda22 its worrying when this starts to happen and a bit upsetting. I am on Methotrexate for my rheumatoid arthritis and had to reduce my dose as I started losing alot of hair and upped my folic acid to 2 times per week.My daughter has had terrible problems with hair loss but this is due to stress when she lost her daughter, this will never come back and cant really be treated.

So I suppose treatment depends on why your hair is thinning, if its due to age then perhaps a good all round vitamin course may help x

Collagen and vitamin c. Collagen is amazing for hair nails and skin . Hope this helps

SarahK1000. Thanks for recommending. I've had thinning hair for 2 years and saw a Dermatologist Consultant for advice. She confirmed hair shedding, (Telegon Effluvium), no specific cause, but I also had scalp inflammation. Had blood screening which results showed normal. But I noticed that ferritin was on very low normal and have taken a daily iron tablet which has helped. I will certainly try collagen and Vit C, thank you.

Hello Panda 🐼,

Many transplant patients take prenatal vitamins, but there is no actual evidence that these work. Transplant patient's hair often fall out due to medication so I know how you feel. 😑 Biotin shampoo helps some . I eat seaweed, but we eat a lot of that anyway in Japan, we have seaweed used especially for cooking. At one point I thought about a wig. But luckily it grew back, not as thick as before though. xx 👋🙂

Surprisingly enough I found the answer to this by accident. I've been taking turmeric and ginger for lung health. In the 4 months I've been taking it my hair has gone from quite thin to really thick. When I researched turns out turmeric is brilliant for thinning hair and male pattern baldness. My hair was never this thick when I was young. Give it a try, you will be surprised.

Kate124. Could I ask if you take these in tablet form, or powder in a drink and what quantities? Thank you

A few years ago my hair started thinning and I had a couple of bald patches. By coincidence I was taking part in some research for ovarian cancer and was in the group selected to have a scan. An 18cm benign tumour was found on one ovary. I immediately had it removed and, hey presto, my hair grew back. Presumably my hormones were upset. Not much comfort to you I know except to suggest it might be worth checking your health with a GP if taking vitamins etc doesn’t work. Good luck with it, B

Hi, I just got this back from my lovely hairdresser :-"" Hi Penel.....yes there are a few things but Biotin (vitamin B7) is the one I always reccomend. Collagen is also good for hair, skin & nails and the primal goddess paleo planet (Nutrition Centre) also has biotin in it....that's what I take....also upping protein is important ""

Hope that helps a bit.

I still reccomend Vitamin D3, I take 3000iu daily, I might go down to 2000iu if the sun would be nice & hang around.

I reccomended ground flaxseed for the fibre to my youngest sister who has very thin hair and rubbish fingernails. She buys bags of it at the supermarket or health food shop but i grind the flaxseeds I buy (so much cheaper). After taking it for a few months she reports that hair has changed texture and her fingernails are amazing for the 1st time in her life (she's a vegetarian who doesn't like vegetables 🙄)!
