“Mr Putin, Pat here and just to let you know we are considering invading your country”

“Is that so Pat, how many troops do you have?”

“300 but we have cards in shop windows and hope to increase that number”

“Pat, in Russia we have 2 million of the finest fighting troops in the world”

Pat says, “I’ll call you back in 10 minutes”

“Mr Putin, we have decided against the idea”

“Why’s that Pat, because we have too many troops?”

“Not at all Mr Putin, it’s just that we have nowhere to put 2 million prisoners”.

Mr Putin arrives in Ireland for talks with Pat Heenan, Ireland Defence Minister. He boards a train to a remote part of the country where he meets Pat waiting at the railway station. But Mr Putin becomes irritated when he sees the station clock showing 1 pm and the clock on platform 2 showing 3pm. "Look here, Pat" says Mr Putin, "this is not a good start to our negotiations, the clock on platform 1 shows the time at 1pm whereas the clock on platform 2 shows 3pm."

Pat looks bemused and replies "Now what would we be needing two clocks for if they both showed the same time?"
