Bronch, Reflux & Coughing

Hi all👋

I’m seeing my Pulmonary Consultant at 9am tomorrow. My Bronch flare up has gone on now for almost three months.

In prep for the meeting, has anyone in this lovely group with Bronchiectasis had:

1. A hiatus hernia and had it repaired? Did it make a difference?

2. Anyone bothered by damage to their oesophagus or progressed to Barrett’s Oesophagus?

Appreciate your input in advance.

Thank you 😀

Hello Lynn193. I have lifelong bronch. From 2000 onwards my swallowing became gradually worse. I had a camera down 3 times and acid tests privately. No Barrett's. All they found was a sore oesophagus. Swallowing got worse. In 2012 I had a bleed from the oesophagus because it had split slightly due to the irritation coming from reflux which all of the private ivestigations had not found. The NHS consultant put me on lanzaprozole which you suck, twice a day. It has been fine since. I have halved the dose but reckon that I shall have to stay on the lanzaprozole. I hope that helped.

Thank you. My whole throat is sore with the coughing - naturally. I’m hoarse too. I’ve heard some folk say lanzaprole has been better for them than Omeprazole. How about yourself? This coughing sucks (inspite following rigorous reflux reduction steps etc.,). I have had to cancel several social events. 🙄

I never had omaprozole but think that it is the fact that I suck the lanzaprozole that has helped most.It sounds to me that your bronch is not being treated properly. You should not be coughing like that for three months. I only cough to empty my lungs of the mucus. This increases obviously if I have more mucus with an exacerbation or have caught somebody's chest virus.

It seems that you have not been having the right antibiotic in the correct form and dose. Do you have a bronch specialist or is your GP trying to deal with it?

Lynn, I don't have the conditions you do, however, my partner has a hiatus hernia.

In terms of how it affects him, he is fine, provided he keeps his weight in a very god place. If he gains weight, his hiatus hernia really lets him know about it. On the upside, it ensures he stays trim.

I don't know if you notice any difference when your more or less trim.

Lynn I have sliding hiatus hernia, just informed 2 mths ago now have increased lansoprazole.

Barrett's esophagus was diagnosed 2019.

But for the fact I brought up blood one day, spent week in hospital on purified foods I would have been none the wiser I had this.

Still on learning curve reading up on it information given on piece of paper and appointment in 6 mths.

Sorry nothing helpful to add but wishing you all the best for tomorrow.

I also have bronchietasis, I have issues with terrible reflux, and a hiatus hernia.I had an endoscope 2 weeks ago. Waiting to see the consultant to see if repairing the hernia would make significant change to the control of my asthma and bronchietasis, and to ensure no further damage is done.

Apologies for not replying to your responses till now. Hernia op is not something my Consultant would recommend she said. I ended up on steroids which almost stopped the cough overnight. Three weeks total with a tapering off in dose over that time. I was just starting to get back to ‘normal’ when hubby started showing signs of Covid (picked it up from work). He tested positive last Sunday and I followed suit on Wednesday. Dreadful 😱. Cough is back with a vengeance. Managed to avoid Covid for 2 years and now pick it up! All I can say is thank God for my 3 jabs because it would have been much worse I’m sure.
