Try googling the active cycle of breathing and watching some you tube videos about it, think they're quite helpful.

I had the same problem. My Dr said a nasal spray used at night would help. It's called fluticasone furoate.

I was just at the doctor's yesterday for the same problem, and once she found my lungs and chest to be completely clear of any infection she told me to buy some ready mixed lemon and honey which I found in my local Asda on the home baking aisle, I mixed 3 teaspoons into hot boiled water and drunk that before getting into bed. I slept all night for the first time in months so worth giving it a go. You can adjust the amount you put in according to taste.

Thanks for that ! I'll be off to Asda later to see if my local branch has that mixture. Good to know it helped you so much. 😀

I have Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis and the coughing is what causes me the biggest problems. Both my GP and specialist weren't very helpful in what can be done about it as the coughing is to help keep my lungs clear. I keep the cough sweet industry going!! Another thing that helps is Boots Glycerine, lemon and honey linctus. Its not just the breathing that distresses me is the fact that people notice that I cough all the time. I don't broadcast my illness to all and I feel that people think they will catch something from me! Its embarrassing? I notice how most people rarely cough and that I rarely don't cough! I sometimes worry I'll damage my throat, chest and lungs with coughing. I sympathise!!

Hi Aingeful. I too have IPF and know exactly what you mean about the embarrassment - the worst is when eating out so I have almost cut that out! The therapist says to persevere and people won't stare (some hopes). For the cough my consultant suggested N-Acetyl-Cysteine twice a day - they stink so must be good, and the chemist recommends Bronco-Stop and Jakeman's chest lozenges.

Hi there Duff1953. I have the same problem as you. When the coughing is REALLY bad, that is 24/7, I take a combination of 500mg paracetemol & 9.6mg coedine. I've discovered the coedine is brilliant for suppressing the cough. I'm usually taking this in conjunction with antibiotics so find a good doctor who will sympathise with your problem. I find all the honey, lemon and cough lollies in the world don't work when it's this bad. Once the infection starts to pass, so does the coughing.

I have the same problem, IPF comes with severe cough which gets worse over time, I have tried everything that has been suggested, I was taken the steroids inhaler, I saw my consultant yesterday and he stopped the inhaler, told me to take the morphine more often, I was worried that it could be habit forming like my GP said, but consultant said it wouldn't be the case so I will obey, I think paracetamol helps too. Can I buy codeine over the counter?

Enjoy the weekend everyone.

I'm in Australia and coedine can no longer be bought over the counter ... must be gotten on a script from your GP.

I use Oramorph which usually helps suppress the coughing, I have also found that frozen fruits such as grapes help me with my coughing bouts. Try everything that you can think of and hopefully you find something works for you.
