haemophilius influenza in sputum test
Haemophyllus Influenzae is one of the bugs which give us bronchs problems. I had it years ago before pseudomonus became the boss bug in my lungs. I was treated with amoxyl, septrin, co amoxyclav and various other antibiotics. Please rest assured that these bugs make us bronchs poorly but we don't pass them to other people. I have never infected my children, my friends or my parents who both had cancer in all of the 70 yrs that I have had bronch although lots of people have given me their viruses which have led to exacerbations. You need the appropriate antibiotic in a high enough dose for at least 14 days. Hope that helped. If you are worried, wear a mask. I would do so anyway with all of the omicron about.
thank you littlepom, never really took any notice what bacteria i have had in past until i got pseudomonas, now im interested lol so could have had it before grateful for your reply ,have to wear mask for work and will carry on out of work not had great 7 months and want to knock this on the head, life is to short 🙂thanks again . Sandra x
Haemophilius influenza is a very stubborn bug - although I dont know if its 'catching', I believe several members have it colonising their lungs leading to HI flare ups.Write it in the search bar and other information will come up for you. Good luck, P
Edit: I see Littlepom has given you a much more informative reply!
thank you, grateful for any help 🙂,will take more interest in.my future sputum samples 😀
Before I was immunized against it,I frequently got HI infections x
I had frequent HIB (Haemopilius) infections & was referred to an immunologist who did blood tests which showed that my antibodies for HIB were below the minimum protective level. I had the immunisation in September 2015 & have not had a HIB infection since. Perhaps suggest this to your GP.
Hi I have had and grown influenzae haemophillis twice and its a very ugly bug takes me weeks to get back to normal afterwards and lead to pneumonia for me,I have bronchiectasis and use amoxicillin prednisolone and Co amoiclav sometimes, it just seems that some people grow different varieties of bugs and at least it has been identified and can have the specific antibiotics to get rid of them.
thank you,GP had put me on Cipro before sputum results, consultant now seen results said carry on with cipro as sputum changing colour if does not resolve to.go on doxy ,fingers and toes crossed, increased carbocisteine to 3 x day ( had been taking it twice ) .Its just getting to know these bugs 🙂
Hi doxycycline is effective if your stomach can tolerate it, I changed from carbocysteine to nacsys 600mg effervescent tablets and they have a remarkable effect on my bronchiectasis clearance
Hi, i had it for over 3 years with my asthma, very stubborn bug to rid of. I was given azythromycin by my hospital 500mg 3 times a week. For 9 months. It did get rid of it in my left lung. Im much better now. Karen xxx
When I was first diagnosed with bronchiectasis I had haemophilus in my lungs. I was told that this was normal and didn't need treating unless I got ill with a chest infection.
Sorry I dont know enough about this to advise but wanted to wish you all the best and hope you get rid of it soon. I wonder why they dont vaccinate when you test positive for this? x
I was diagnosed with this and was given steroids and told to take a double dose of doxycyclin antibiotics. This seemed to improve things a lot. I'd already had two courses of antibiotics prior to this, but the double dose seemed to work a lot better, alongside the steroids.
I’ve had it a couple of times. Treated with antibiotics and it went away. I was told that a lot of people have it and don’t know about it. It’s only us with the dodgy lungs who have a problem. I hope you get the appropriate treatment and it goes away.
Hello, I had the same infection about 4 years ago and was put on Doxyclines at the time I was doing a pulmonary rehabilitation course at the local hospital which I was allowed to continue with as this bug not infectious. Take care Mags
Hi Sandra, I've had haemophilus twice and each time it was a job to get rid of it. Doxi didn't work for me, 14 days of Co-amoxiclav +prednisolone finally finished it off. After the 2nd infection I was put on Azith and I haven't had it since, but for two or three months afterwards I wondered if I would ever feel really well again. Go back to your doctor if your current medication doesn't shift it. Best wishes.
I’ve also had this bug. I’ve had several lots of doxycycline which appear to help me feel better but didn’t have any effect on my cough. When my sputum samples were tested the lab said it was sensitive to both doxycycline and amoxicillin.
Last time I was given amoxicillin which really seemed to help for me. I finished the course just after Christmas and haven’t coughed since which is a first for nearly 2 years (was diagnosed with bronchiectasis 1.5 years ago). I still can’t believe I’m not coughing everyday.
I was told by my immunologist that the bug lives in peoples throats and that I wouldn’t always necessarily be given antibiotics just because it’s in a sputum sample as it’s something a lot of people have. He said they would go on how I was presenting as well. Not sure if this is correct or not and I haven’t been told this by my respiratory consultant.
Hope the antibiotics work and you’re feeling better soon x
I have had this bug a few times two weeks of Doxycycline, and five days of prednisone work for me
I had it and was found that my immunity was low so had to have the HIB and pneumonia vaccine again.
