Christmas gifts for men ?

Thepainterswife profile image
55 Replies

Can anyone on here give me any ideas for Christmas gifts for hubby ?Are any of you older men thinking “ I wish someone would get me ……,,” I really am struggling this year Hubby has everything he needs in the way of clothes, he has toiletries from last Christmas and plenty alcohol in the cupboard due to his love of alcohol diminishing over the years Last year I bought him a new bigger tv for his bedroom , he was thrilled with that but there’s nothing on those lines he needs now 🤷🏻‍♀️ He used to love reading but since developing cataract that’s gone by the board even though he has had the op , he just doesn’t have the enthusiasm 😩The only thing he really enjoys now is chocolate (and Stilton cheese 🤢)and I think that’s what I’ll have to go with if nothing better comes up , I don’t want to as he already gets through tons of it every week so not a great option health wise ☹️I’d be really grateful for any ideas TIA x

Perhaps a subscription to Amazon audible who have plenty of audio books and i think every month i get a book for free so i have built up quite a collection and there are often freebies on the site too?

😊😻 x

Just what I was going to suggest ski ❤️😻xx

That’s an idea , I’ll look into that thanks 😃

I was going to suggest that, and maybe an iPod or similar to listen to them. I have a subscription to Audible - they have books from every genre and also do podcasts and interviews.

If your library service does it you can subscribe for free to BorrowBox and Libby where you get audiobooks for free to your mobile or pc. Also Libby which gives you free online access to over 200 magazines - anything from gardening to glamour for pc or mobile - again from the library service

Thanks for that info and i will investigate that link,i am rather housebound and our local library is closed for the next 12 weeks ,mind you i haven't used thier services for many years.😊

That’s good ! I’ll be looking into that too I used to love going to the library from being a child and then I got a job in a care home and we had a mobile library come to us . Fourteen years later after retiring from the care home I went back to the library and I was so disappointed, I would say there was less than 50% of books available compared to my last visit . I suppose we should be grateful we still have a library at all in the town centre , practically all the local ones have closed down 😢

Oh dear, I don’t envy you at all. It’s so difficult, I struggled with Pete’s 70th birthday in October and ended up buying a map of where we used to live, Sunbury-on-Thames. We met, married, lived and brought up the children there. It was from the Book of Everyone. Might be worth checking out as they do lots of other things too. Good luck xxx💙💜🤗

Thank you Hanne. Hope you’re alright after your trip to RBH the other day. Xxx💜

Oh yes I’m fine. Such a long day, it wiped me out for a while, & doing the IVs is so tricky with my hands, but starting to feel better already, on day 4. Thank you for remembering ❤️

No ideas I'm afraid Val, hubby and I gave up buying presents for each other years ago! Great suggestion from ski's though.

Thepainterswife profile image
Thepainterswife in reply toCDPO16

I know Carole, we should give up too I know it’s stressful for Geoff too , he always gives me money to get what I want and then gets our daughter to get surprises but I know it upsets him that he can’t do it himself . It’s just old habits dying hard 🙄

As well as audio books etc. as a previous book lover have you considered a kindle? Using this he can alter the print size to what he finds comfortable. Change the screen light and so on. The kindle is very much designed for the reader. I find the actual kindle is better than just using the app on other devices.

Thepainterswife profile image
Thepainterswife in reply toBevvy

He’s actually got a kindle , he had a small one then got a much bigger one and he has a portable DVD player and earphones etc so I’m struggling to think of any other gadgets but thanks anyway 😊

Oh! To be honest when I have really struggled to get my dad gifts I have purchased Amazon vouchers and let him choose for himself!! He is now 85yrs and has anything he might want! He usually gets a mixture of items with the vouchers and never things I would have thought he wanted.Otherwise does he have any particular interests that might have a magazine? A friend purchased her husband a year’s subscription for a magazine and he was thrilled with it.

Amazon vouchers sound brilliant , I didn’t even know they did them 😃 I tend to stick with Ebay but Geoff does Amazon - I’ll look into that Thanks x

My dream was to travel on the Orient Express but that was soon knocked on the head when i found out they had no showering facilities.

What about a box of personalised handkerchiefs with his initials?

A Waterford crystal decanter or tumbler?

Thepainterswife profile image
Thepainterswife in reply toMrbojangles

That’s my dream to ! They have no showers ??😩 I was expecting all the mod cons encased in mahogany and brass with David Suchet in the next compartment 😢 Another dream dashed ! Monogrammed handkerchiefs and a crystal tumbler would go down well actually 😃 thank you

U could make him a hamper with different cheeses +various crackers, variety of chocs + nice biscuits

SOCkS ! 😃😃

Thepainterswife profile image

😂He doesn’t even wear socks , every couple of years I buy him a pair of smart leather boot slippers lined in sheepskin and he doesn’t feel the need for socks , unlike me - two pairs and an electric foot warmer and still frozen feet 😩. Thank you anyway

More expensive suggestion: my husband has an HD TV to watch his sports programmes, so I got him an HD sound bar - it made a real difference, as if we were in the crowd.

Thepainterswife profile image
Thepainterswife in reply toErgendl

Something else to look into 😃 I bought him a bigger tv for his bedroom last year he loves it and he does enjoy sport . whilst he’s never complained about the sound anything that enhances the experience would be good , thanks

Hi. Yes, i have the same problem. Buying for the older man is difficult. Not sure i can be of any help. However, I did well last year when I bought my husband a one off light aircraft flying lesson. He loved it. Experience days are very popular. This year we have purchased National Trust passes. All being well we will enjoy a few visits and days out. His stocking filler is a gift of mixed nuts. These can come in presentation boxes and they can be flavoured. Hope it helps. Good luck.

forgot to mention a Kindle works well for me. They sre back lit so reading in the dark is possible. Also the size of the text can be widely varied. I have my text really large so I don't have to overwork my eyes.

One of the things that I bought my son in law was a Keysmart key ring and he was delighted with it. I struggled for ages to find something different. I got it on Amazon. I was going to suggest an audio book but Skis beat me to it x

Thepainterswife profile image
Thepainterswife in reply toIzb1

I had to check what this was and it’s a brilliant idea ! Wouldn’t be of use to hubby because he’s housebound with no use for keys but certainly would be good for the son in law and grandsons , thanks x

Sorry- no suggestions. My husband is happy with chocolates and a bottle of Baileys. This year I'm getting him some decent braces, but not many men need them the way he does. The rest of his wardrobe is in annoyingly good condition.

Thepainterswife profile image
Thepainterswife in reply toAlberta56

Frustrating isn’t it ? Geoff has two large wardrobes full of beautiful shirts , suits etc that he’ll never wear but doesn’t want to get rid of . He now has “easy on and off “ clothes pj bottoms , tee shirts and hoodies with pockets . He always looks smart but I’d have so much more room if I could dispose of the massive wardrobes 🤦🏻‍♀️ xx

Alberta56 profile image
Alberta56 in reply toThepainterswife

Brian has got so obese he needs braces to hold his jogging bottoms up. Sad isn't it. I'm also going to get him a new phone, since the battery seems to have died on his old one. He got it off Sue, who needed a new one after leaving this one in a garment she put in the washing machine. The bell stopped working, which Brian doesn't mind, since he can phone you, but you can't phone him. 🙃🙃🤪🤪

Thepainterswife profile image
Thepainterswife in reply toAlberta56

😂🤣😂 sounds just like Geoff ! x

Some great ideas here! Others have suggested an Audible subscription (fab for sleepless nights) and a Kindle (I’m on mine all the time, love it) so I think Amazon vouchers would be good (I’m ideologically opposed to Amazon as an organization but it’s SO useful.)

I’m going to look into a soundbar and a Key Smart - great ideas.

My husband is an obsessive reader of non-fiction so he always gets about a dozen books for Christmas which last him til his birthday, when he gets… more books! But this year I’ve also got him a jolly red cashmere scarf.

Thepainterswife profile image
Thepainterswife in reply to

Ooooh cashmere scarf sounds good 😃 Geoff doesn’t go out but he was still borrowing my scarves last year during the most cold weather ! Yes there’s been some really good ideas I’m going to have to dip into the life savings 😂

If he enjoys cooking then how about a year’s subscription to one of the outfits that send you all the measured ingredients and the instructions in a box and you just put it together It’s quite fun and makes a man feel vaguely talented 😀

Thepainterswife profile image
Thepainterswife in reply toCasey1013

That’s a novel idea 😃 ( the subscription not men being vaguely talented - that’s debatable 😂) Do you have any names ? Or any idea what I’d google to find them ?

there’s Gousto, Fresh Direct, Mindful Chef. Also a recent Independent Review of their top choicesindependent.co.uk/extras/in...

If he is a Bible-reader or wants to become one, an audio Bible might be great.

My wife and I each got one of the following recently (she wanted one after seeing mine):

KJV Hendrickson My-iBible--voice only

Narrated By: Alexander Scourby

HENDRICKSON PUBLISHERS / 2015 / OTHER, N/A

Stock No: WW706699

We got them from ChristianBook DOT com. You can search the site using the above "Stock No" to find it. I wasn't sure if I could post links in my comment, so doing it this way. It costs $59.95.

The reviews were helpful in my decision.

Very user-friendly and simple. Rechargeable battery.

I go out for walks with mine (using ear buds and a belt case I got from Amazon) and my wife uses hers on a little cell phone-type stand while cooking and while getting ready for bed in the evening (using the built-in speaker).

We each got one so we could keep our places in the Bible-reader (it saves the place when turned off). We both started at Genesis and are just going through it slowly but surely.

I am in the States, so all of the above is based upon my experience from here.

How about an iPad! I absolutely love mine and have just bought the iPad mini so I can take it to clients in my bag. I could lose myself for hours looking up things, watching TV programs, watching YouTube ordering my shopping, emailing friends looking at things I don’t know, the choices are endless.

Thepainterswife profile image
Thepainterswife in reply toKristen48

Couldn’t agree more Kristen , I had one for years , I was mortified when it gave up the ghost but Geoff has a big kindle that he says does the same thing 🤔

Kristen48 profile image
Kristen48 in reply toThepainterswife

I’m fraid I can’t agree a kindle does the same as an iPad. There are so many differences the main one being that a Kindle is not online where as an iPad is. You can’t bank on a kindle shop on a kindle watch films on a kindle find out route to places are many others. Maybe you could drop a hint to get one for Christmas yourself

Thepainterswife profile image
Thepainterswife in reply toKristen48

I’m sure you’re right re all the differences but he seems happy with the kindle 🤷🏻‍♀️ We both have i phones too now which (although I never thought I would ) l now use exactly as I did the iPad 😃

My mum got a Kindle when her iPad went wrong. It's a small one, easy to carry. Hers is a Kindle fire and cost £49 new from a certain online store that starts with A and ends in mazon. It goes online and although she doesn't watch TV or films, she can read and send emails, do online banking, online shopping, read the news, look at websites, and really do everything she used to do on her iPad. And of course she reads books on it.

Good ideas from everyone. I have been following this thread with interest as I've always found it difficult to come up with something new for the men in my life - husband, son and 2 sons-in-law. I am now looking at the Keysmart keyring, which I'd never heard of, for all of them. Thanks for that suggestion Izb1 ! Another idea for anyone who enjoys cooking - I'd recommend the Haynes manual - haynes.com/en-gb/mens-cooki... - which was bought for my husband a few years ago and has been well used since. The layout is just like the Haynes car manuals and it's very amusingly - but knowledgeably - written.

Thanks so much everyone for all the great suggestions. I have been shopping today and got three things from the list , I’ll be signing him up to Amazon audible and I’m sure he’s going to be really happy with everything 😊 I’m just so pleased to have got everything done and no trailing around the shops with no idea what to get . I will be making a list of all the other suggestions for future use as it wasn’t easy to decide which to go for ! Thanks again xxx. Ps I also received an E mail last night from Renown Pictures which is the website for the Talking Pictures tv channel In the past I’ve bought dvds from them and now they are selling the autobiography of the founder who , my husband is always telling me ( because he finds it amazing) started the whole thing from his garden shed 😯. I’ve bought that for him in the hope it will reignite his love of reading and if anyone else is interested it’s £17. 99 postage free 😊

I am sure he will be delighted with your choices and i am just looking forward to what Scruff's has got for me.even if it is only an extra hour in bed before duties i will be delighted.

😂😼 x

Thepainterswife profile image
Thepainterswife

I would really love to think Scruffs will be trawling around the shops looking for something special for you on Christmas Eve but sadly I don’t think its going happen Scruffs has had a lean year what with the racing career not going too well and the ships cat thing coming to nothing ☹️ I fear it will be down to you to provide extra dreamies , tuna and beer around the litter tray to ensure a good time is had by all .Nevertheless I’m sure you and scruffs ( like Wallace and Gromit ) will enjoy Christmas side by side on the sofa ,enjoying a good film and surrounded by orange gin and cat treats 😃 xx
