Emergency meds

Has anyone been told Toby their gp not to start taking emergency meds without checking with them first? Seems a bit pointless!

Hi ac3399, I expect some have but Pete has always used his antibiotics and steroids when he’s felt the necessity. He does take Azithromycin three times a week so chest infections are kept to a minimum. Xxx

I haven't been told that but have been told to ring my GP surgery to notify them when I do start rescue meds.

I have always been trusted to be sensible and take meds when I need them. I even have emergency meds on my repeat prescription so easy to replenish.I agree total waste of time if you have to speak to gp before taking them. What if you unwell at weekend or can’t get an appointment…. ?

Some people here have to tell gp once started taking them and that can be sensible. I tend to only inform gp/get gp appointment if after starting course I am not getting any better or getting worse so need a continuation of meds. Sadly this has happened a number of times to me.

I agree with you entirely Bevvy. Ridiculous for them to give you meds and then say ‘but you can’t take them unless you speak to us first’.

No. They were given to me several years ago to nip an exacerbation in the bud. I know my body and take them when needed!

Me too Maricopa. I just ring surgery tell receptionists what I need and husband collects them from chemist a couple of days later. No problem. Suits me just fine. If a doc wanted to know anything he or she would contact me surely rather than me waste their time calling them. I hope they don’t change the system! 😀

That’s exactly what I was doing until I got a lecture from the triage doctor when I asked for replacements telling me that I’m ‘not allowed’ to just take them - they need to check first if I have an infection!!!

Basically I ring 111 and talk to them. They normally say do you have emergency medications? I say yes. They say start them. When the GP is open I then ring them.

Hi I inform my gp that I need to take them ,send in a mucus sample for testing and reorder emergency meds at the same time.pretty much explains my need for using them as it's hard to see a doctor even now

I was told to let Dr know when I start on the emergency meds. When I do she then writes a prescription for a repeat pack. So I always have some. if it's at the weekend then I phone on monday morning, seems to work well,
