Hi, Rob. I understand from what others have posted on here, that it can be quite dangerous to use supplemental oxygen if you have not been prescribed it by your doctor.
Hopefully someone with more experience will be along soon to give you more information. Wishing you all the best.
All of us here using oxygen will have had it prescribed after an assessment of need. To use it without that is not advisable and could be dangerous. Why do you think you need it if your doctor has said no?
Before being prescribed oxygen you have to have your blood oxygen levels checked by the oxygen nurse. A nurse can only do an assessment if instructed by a respiratory consultant or respiratory doctor. I can only assume that at this stage the doctor doesn't think you need it.
Hello I have large concentrator for at home plus tanks. Also one for outdoors. If doc thinks it's needed or specialist it will be given. Only available on prescription. Wouldnt attempt to try without prescription. Full assessment needed with blood gases and walking test.
Hi, I see you are on palative care now, so I am sure if oxygen was necessary you would have it prescribed. There are reasons that oxygen would make you worse, or maybe the injections will relax your breathing. The best thing is to ask the nurses why you don't have it, they will have the answers. Take care. Maggie
My husband has oxygen concentrators but was rushed in hospital last year with respiratory failure , he was in a life threatening situation for 8 hours , given a 50-50 chance of survival Turns out it’s not just about taking oxygen in it’s also about your lungs ability to breathe out the carbon dioxide , which is a killer ! Hubby is still on oxygen ( for the benefit of his heart, kidneys etc ) but at lower levels this is why it’s vital to be assessed. He now carry’s a card stating he is Oxygen sensitive so that medical staff , ambulance men etc will not give him too much in an emergency.
