One thing missing from the otherwise very thorough, impartial and illuminating report, is that Javid had been double vaccinated and still got infected (which illustrates the point about the less than 100% effectiveness of the vaccine). As such a high profile figure, it would be interesting to see how his condition progresses and also how he became infected (I have been concerned for some time that the increased transmissibility of the delta variant might imply a different route of infection).

Andrew Marr, who was in much the same position, reported feeling very unwell and his symptoms were more of a bad cold than the more widely advertised COVID symptoms. This is important if the nation is to tread carefully as the PM has advised, because vaccination does not imply immunity and the more vulnerable amongst us still need protection.

No double vaccination is not a guarantee, a person can still become infected and then infect others. All part of the Bozo gamble. The other nasty part of the gamble is long Covid as mentioned in the CNN report, these sufferers may well remember who created Virus Freedom Day, when they received the Johnson Curse of Long Covid

I too wondered where Javid may have picked up the virus. I doubt that we will get to know. He seems to have very mild symptoms so will probably recover well.

At the other end of the scale you have places like Australia / NZ perusing a ‘Zero Covid’ policy. That is an absurd position to take unless they intend to isolate their countries from the rest of the world forever.

Everyone seems concerned about ‘daily cases’. The bottom line is that ‘cases’ is a meaningless measure now that most infections are minor and no more of an inconvenience for the individual than many other minor illnesses.

Of course some people will still get a serious life threatening case of Covid; others might get a case of pneumonia of flu with similar risk. The vulnerable still need protection just as they would in a flu epidemic.

One thing Johnson is right about is that individuals should take personal responsibility. He could have said that on 23 March last year. His justification now is the vaccine which depending whether you believe the Johnson hyperbole is ‘world beating’ or more sensibly assessed probably has only 66% efficacy!!

In fairness to Johnson he has NOT created Virus Freedom Day. That is an invention of our brainless media. Johnson has lifted restrictions in stages and slowly including a further 4 week delay.

Only time will prove Johnson right or wrong.

I agree with all you say, but will go one step further to which you may all well disagree and that's okay! For the media to even imply that people should think this is an experiment he is conducting is, to my mind, distasteful and wholly unfair. This subject is now reaching the heights of machiavellian proportion and is becoming rediculous! How I understand the lifting of restrictions is that it's a fine balancing act in getting the economy going again whilst trying to protect people's physical and mental well-being. You would have to be blind not to notice in recent weeks that people were gradually taking these steps for themselves anyway - people were getting tired of it all! Of course this is a gamble in the latest turn of events which may well backfire for BJ but it's not an experiment.

Personally, I do think mandatory masking should have continued for a while longer purely so that everyone would know what was expected of them and brook no argument. Having said that I think for the most part people will be sensible and do this as well as take the precautions outlined by the scientists.

We are expected to bring our children up to be independent and take personal responsibility for themselves and this is all that the government is asking of all of us! We have to take this journey sooner or later.

in reply toAnnie31

Yes - personally I find it very strange that a lot of people still WANT the Government to legislate their lives.

It is like a large part of the population have just been turned into order taking zombies over the past year.

Certainly I do personally know people who are enjoying furlough just a little too much!!! Newsflash - furlough is not real life.......

in reply to

I think it’s more a question of looking to the government for leadership at a time of unprecedented national emergency. Not that Mr Johnson & his cabinet have proved equal to the task - far from it, imo. Although I think Mr Sunak’s furlough & business protection schemes saved jobs and businesses

in reply to

Mr Sunak's furlough scheme is just delaying a lot of redundancies.

A lot of people are currently being paid to sit at home while certain sectors - (like hospitality / nursing) - can't attract enough staff.

Economic nonsense. A political game to appear to keep unemployment low.

Mr Sunak was a high flying Investment Banker - so his understanding of real life, real jobs, and real people, won't be great.

in reply to

It has certainly delayed some redundancies. It was inevitable that some employers would be cynical in their use of the scheme (and the business loans.)I do wish the government had paid people to self-isolate. That was a major flaw in their policy. A great many people didn’t have tests and didn’t sign up the the covid app purely because they couldn’t afford to be told to take time off work, or pay the fine if they failed to do so.

in reply to

Yes some employers have no doubt been cynical.

Others will simply have to lay staff off now it is becoming clear that Government policy is destroying their business.

Aviation / travel / nightclubs / theatres for example.

in reply toAnnie31

Your point Annie31 that people have been taking these steps themselves anyway seems to be lost on a lot of people.

All that has really changed today is the 'rule of 6' (which was arbitrary nonsense anyway) and the 1 / 2 / 1 meter + rule - whatever it ended up as!

Personally if I had wanted 10 people round my house before today I would have done it without any qualms. And just because the rule has changed today does not mean I am going to throw 'open house' every day!!! People live in a certain way.

Only a minority of people will go 'off their heads' and chances are they would have done it anyway irrespective of Johnson's decision.

Similarly I gave people a respectable distance before Covid / during Covid / and will do after Covid. I don't need a silly rule to tell me to do that!

The media just needs to shut up about Covid and report some of the other things that are happening in the world and in the country. But unfortunately stupid Covid headlines attract 'clicks'; advertisers; and £. It's that simple.

Quite! The media has a lot to answer for in my opinion! They're not happy unless they're fearmongering, sensationalising and creating a heightened sense of paranoia about covid all the time. Drives me mad!

Hope is what sustains us I think! Let's face it, with chronic illness we are all well versed in that stuff!

This was Andrew Marr’s experience. Very nasty, and he’s not CEV google.co.uk/amp/s/www.bbc....
