Well, I am 2 years smoke free this week!! (Yay) but jeez, have I piled on the pounds!!!!!!

It would appear, after a chat with the nurse, I haven't been handling my illness too well πŸ€” and have been sitting on my arse feeling sorry for myself for quite some time (shocker) Big kick up the backside for me then, I can tell ya!! So I'm back on the health kick..... slowly!!

Any tips from you guys would be helpful.... I'm looking to lose at least 5kg, sensibly of course!!

Well done happy for you 😌!! Just eat smaller portions over the day and nibbles on fruits and vegetables, like carrots some fresh apples, they lovely at the moment.I lose good weight with rice, because I getting fast full from a meal.

Nice fruit smoothies are great when getting hungry. Chicken salad with some olive oil and rice. There lots of things you can try. And of course a bit excersise, even when sitting. LOL Drinks with glucose are good and support your body. I always make them myself, just fresh lemon πŸ‹πŸ‹πŸ‹ water, or sparkling water πŸ’¦πŸ’¦ with a spoon Glucose Powder, it's healthy and refreshing. Special when it's so warm.

Best wishes πŸ˜ƒπŸŒΊπŸ˜ƒπŸ‘and take care πŸ˜ƒ

Thanx for the exercise video ☺ Food isn't really the issue, on investigation. I've always eaten little n often and relatively healthy, home cooked food/salads. It's more my lack of activity, in hindsight 😞 The main task now is motivating myself to do something about it! My energy levels ain't great for starters. Changing my mindset is the first challenge, I've allowed my diagnosis of emphysema to cloud my abilities for far too long! Onwards & upwards now 🀞

I found it relatively easy to lose weight long ago in the spring time when I felt more active and found a lot of my summer clothes bulged. Why is it so much harder now? I can only do it when I'm able to exercise a bit and I find vegetarian food helps. I look at the British Diabetic Association recipes for ideas. Don't know if this helps-we're all different. It's splendid that you've stayed fag free for 2 years. Shows a lot of determination. xxx

Hi, just a suggestion, but if you keep a daily record of what you eat you will see where the calories are. As i am prediabetic i knew I had to cut down on sugary food and drink. I loved coca cola, sweets and chocolate so stopped buying them. If its not in the cupboard you cant have it! I have lost a stone over 6 mths cutting them out. I rejoined my chair based exercise class two weeks ago and take a walk each day. Smaller potions of food also help and eating slowly. Well done stppping smoking. I wish my son in law could stop.

Congrats to you RR for your weight loss. Takes a lot of discipline not to buy things you like. Hope you feel better for it.

Thanks and yes it was hard but i dont miss them now. It was a habit as i was born just after the war and was given my family sweet rations and developed a sweet tooth.Cheers

Congrats on being an ex smoker. I have emphysema but luckily no weight problem, if anything the reverse as I am underweight. Try to choose some way of exercising that you may enjoy. I know from a personal perspective that motivation can be lacking and some forms of exercise boring. Take it easy to begin with too. Good luck x

Congratulations on snubbing the fag habit. Really difficult to lose the weight but so was giving up the fags. I believe if you managed to give up the fags you’ve got the will power to start on your weight loss journey. Believe in yourself. Try to eat better choices along with a little more activity and you’ll get there.

Thank you ☺ but in all honesty the giving up smoking was almost instantaneous as upon my diagnosis my mother's words, as blunt as she ALWAYS is!, were "oh hell, you're gonna go like your grandad did!" He died at 54 due to emphysema 😐 Shit the life outta me!I was 48! And it ain't happening to me!!! Patches, gum, lozenges, you name it, I tried it! The hardest bit was finding something else to do!! Jeez the house was spotless πŸ˜‚ but I didn't touch another cigarette πŸ‘ But those same words have haunted me these past 2 year , limiting ( in my mind) what I can/can't do. Sort of a 'makes me unable to breath, don't do it. Mindset being "I'm gonna go like my grandad did!' (Cheers mother!!) So here we are (me) 13kg overweight feeling really fecking shite about it πŸ˜• realising what's happened and giving myself the biggest kick up the arse ever πŸ‘ultimately gaining the sheer determination to lose the weight, get back into (some sort of) shape and stop this 'I'm going to go like my grandad did ..... NOT at 54 I'm not!!!! I've got so much to live for 😊

Congratulations on quitting the ciggies. Smaller portions and exercise are important. You don’t have to be in a marathon just move🐞

Replace white bread and rice etc with wholemeal and wholegrain, replace sugary foods with fruit, fill up on fruit and veggies and keep portions of meat and protein foods small. Cook using water rather than fat. Good luck.
