The respiratory nurse did call me about my care plan and was very pleasant. However, when it came to the incorrect FEV1/FVC percentage, she was surprised I'd already calculated it - 28.1%😒 (felt quite secure, knowing 2greys had calculated the same figure). She said I was right, but, very optimistically told me, that they only use these figures for diagnosis now and focus more on how you are feeling etc.
At least I know I'm not going mad, even if the figure was rather depressing.

Poor figures do affect how we feel, mentally if not always physically. I suspect that mine are below 20% now, not having had a spirometry test since Nov 2019 when my Fev1 was 24%. I try not to think about it and hope that you will be able to too. Best wishes x
As a former maths teacher I sometimes feel that those like me must that we have completely failed! I have always thought that we should concentrate more on arithmetic and recognising sensible answers from what the technology throws up!
My mother was a Maths teacher and I did Maths cover lessons (I'm very fond of the subject). Basic arithmetical ability was sadly lacking and yet so important for everyday life!
Sadly I am not good at Maths. I liked arithmetic at primary school but my secondary school teacher though the louder she shouted, the same thing, the clearer it would become. It didn't!
Unfortunately, what you have said appears to be too common. Hence, a lot of bad behaviour in Maths classes. Shouting from the teacher, being one of them. Luckily not all teachers are like that and you were unlucky, but it can leave you with a sense of
I'm not good at this subject, which isn't necessarily true. You've been made to feel that way.
"they only use these figures for diagnosis now and focus more on how you are feeling etc." Probably just a poor excuse for getting it wrong. How on earth can a diagnosis be made using wrong results?
Take heart that 28% was my last result 2 years ago and I am still trucking on okay today. Whilst 28% it is not good by any means, I can still function and do most things still, albeit a little slower. I was still working full time, on my feet all day, until the first lockdown came along and spoilt the party.
Hello anng18. Despite what the figures say we have to keep pushing on the best we can for as long as possible. Because we can't really do anything else. I struggle with thinking how things could get worse. But we have to focus on the now and enjoy life while we can Brian
My lovely Consultant once told me they are only figures . He said the patient in front of me in a wheel chair and on 24/7 0xygen ,their results were far higher than mine ,but they chose to give in. This was over 10yrs ago ..I never ask what the results are of my Spirometry test as I go by how I feel. I am a very Positive person and believe this is why I get around as I do. Good luck and stay Positive. xxSheila 👍💕🥰
I was never told my spirometry results when I was diagnosed in2019 and I did not realise one could ask for them, (another thing I learnt on this forum). Perhaps ignorance really is bliss.
To be honest I have no idea what these figures are when I was first diagnosed the Nurse said I had the breathing ability of an 80 year old & the following year a 75 year old . I was pleased at that lol . I can quite easily get baffled by the Science & am ok with that , up to a point. Being on this site I take heart from the questions & answers I see . This past year as far as Doctors etc go I’ve not got the same answer from5 different doctors and am fast losing confidence in them . The Nurse was the most helpful & positive and told me not to worry she would keep me well . So between her & this group I’m feeling positive. Hope you will to xx
