Never received a shielding letter

Hello everyone, I have had bronchitis and asthma since I was 9 years old however I never received a shielding letter throughout the pandemic. I did work everyday external to the house. I have now been informed I should have been shielding but doctors surgery said I wasn’t serious enough but specialists are not happy. Anyone else experienced this possibly falling through the net

This comes down to a difference of opinion between a General Practitioner and Specialists. You didn't say how many Specialists and their field of specialism. If the Specialists are Pulmonary then their opinion should carry more weight than a GP.

I think so! I didn't get anything about anything, completely off the radar!

From what I can gather from my own kids these warnings were taken on board more by employers not wishing to get into trouble by not offering working from home if possible!

Yes, I think that happened alot. My eldest daughter had two underlying conditions that required shielding and she was asked to work from home but the company actually shut down all the offices and supplied everyone (and this was a lot of people!) With new laptops, internet and appropriate telephone services. The same with my younger son and he has no health issues but they've actually sold the offices now and they are all working from home very successfully. However my older son was asked to work at home because his company knew about me but it couldn't be continued because of the very nature of the business! It didn't bother me what he did, that's life!

You're right of course Bev that shielding has officially finished. However if you work its useful to have a letter to show your employers as they are required to make 'reasonable adaptations'* to accommodate people who are clinically extremely vulnerable.

Even though shielding has finished, official advice is still to be careful and that can sometimes be hard at work unless your boss understands.

*(I think that's the phrase but someone may correct me - it was something like that anyway.)

I think it probably is still relevant - at least it something to have with you to remind them. We may be almost out of lockdown but the pandemic hasnt gone away! x

The specialists were cardiologist and lung They have not been happy. Yes the shielding maybe ending but considering I have had to work External to home with no home office facilities WiFi etc I live in the countryside I just wondered if anyone else had the concern through the Pandemic. I have found that my doctors are now Reknown in the area for being selective with families on who they shielded. All down to the Practice Manager 😀
