Oxygen and Holidays

Hi, I know it’s possible to have a concentrator delivered to a holiday cottage. Can you tell me whether it is sometimes a problem with the cottage owners.

I’m on the lung transplant list, but at the moment none are being done. I heard yesterday that it will be at least 2 months, until transplants are up and running. Although my mobility is greatly reduced, a change of scene after 13 months of shielding is really needed, but If getting oxygen is complicated then it maybe easier to stay at home.

Hi Mary, I’m sure a change of scenery would do you the power of good. We own a holiday cottage in South Cumbria & would have no problem with accommodating your oxygen requirements.

Hi mary1956, I have never had any problems, just contact your Respiratory Nurse with your confirmed dates for your holiday, they will then arrange for your oxygen equipment delivery to your destination, just contact your cottage owner to make them aware of oxygen demands and arrange a time for oxygen equipment to be delivered.

I hope I have been some help.

Ian.

There would be no need for a 'hard' (permanent) installation so I do not see any issues any more than plugging in a laptop or hairdryer etc. A simple enquiry to the owner before renting would be the best course of action, explaining that it would be a stand alone, portable machine.

I take a short break every year at a reunion and contact my oxygen supplier in advance with the hotel details. They deliver a concentrator and spare portable cylinders to my destination ahead of my arrival and collect them, and empties, after we have left. Our local supplier here in North Wales is Baywater, who are amazing, and they take care of all the arrangements at the destination with the regional contractor. We have used this system for several years in Cornwall, Eastern England, West Sussex, Scotland and Northumberland. If we are touring, with stop-overs on the outward or return journey, I take one of my home concentrators stood upright in the boot and secured to the rear headrest for safety. I check with the hotel in advance and confirm that they have details; always worked 100%. Enjoy your trip! GeoffU

Just be aware that lots of holiday cottage owners are charging far more than usual for stays. I had hoped to go away for 5 days or so. Which is something I have done before on a number of occasions. This time when I enquired the costs were horrendous so unable to go. 😢

What a shame, thank you for the warning. I’m going to do some homework today.

We always check with the owners but it’s never been a problem. If electricity is included in the cottage hire you would definitely need to tell them as your usage will be higher. Our oxygen suppliers arrange delivery and pick up from a local oxygen supplier. Not sure about your centre but my husbands are really happy for him to go on holiday we just tell them where we are and if he got a call they would pick him up from there. Hope you manage to get away and your list is back up and running soon.

Thank you for your reply. Birmingham said that they would not want us to be more than 2 hour drive away, so we are limited as to where we can go. Now that there are definitely no transplants for a few more weeks we thought we would get away to the coast, which wouldn’t be possible if there was a possibility of a call.

Hi Mary,Yes I have had Oxygen delivered to places when I had been on holiday. Just check the cottage will allow oxygen. Then ring BOC they will deliver to your cottage. Also collect it when you leave. Hope this helps.

I’ve been to self catering twice with oxygen. I booked the accommodation then arranged the oxygen. I don’t think anybody would refuse you arranging it, they just need to access property before your arrival to deliver and assess its suitability. Good luck and enjoy your break. Joy. x

Hi Mary , I have travelled to Shetland, to Hastings Cardiff from Northern Ireland and never had any problems. A quick phone call to owners of properties to confirm it’s suitable everyone very helpful. I contacted BOC they forward information to local suppliers.
