No pain means no gain when it comes to reaping exercise benefits for people with peripheral artery disease (PAD), reports a new Northwestern Medicine study published in JAMA.
In people with peripheral artery disease, walking for exercise at an intensity that induces ischemic leg pain (caused by restricted blood flow) improves walking performance — distance and length of time walking — the study found. Walking at a slow pace that does not induce ischemic leg symptoms is no more effective than no exercise at all, the study showed.
For me that is not an issue, the pain arrives before having to stop to catch my breath, even walking at a slowish pace compared to a healthier person. I have very severe Emphysema, Sharon has moderate COPD and she can leave standing, having to wait for me to catch up. My circulation is severely restricted from the waist down, Oximeter on my toe sats only read 55.
does the rate you can walk at help at all? . but you still try to walk ? never thought about oximeter reading on feet being different. I have one leg that has damaged veins where ankle and foot now swollen due to double dose of metronizadole being given for infected tooth. This resulted in all sorts of side effects. One of them apparently being to reduce resistence to infection-- not happy about that as double dose was not necessary.
I keep walking despite the pain until my legs will not function properly and at risk of falling. I never consider walking slower as I always have a purpose, a destination to reach or catching up to Sharon, imagine a donkey with a carrot on a stick.

It is good to get mildly out of breath. My consultant encourages it whilst exercising. The important thing to remember is there is a difference between between being out of breath and being breathless and desaturating. I take a pulse oximeter with me and check my O2 levels at regular intervals. I also use purse lip breathing when exercising which helps in control.
Yes I regularly get out of breath . I live on middle floor in a 3 storey house . You have no idea how ofter I have to go up and down those stairs ! Bathroom up and utility room and freezer down. It has been suggested I do a Captain Tom up and down stairs as i have no garden to walk around.I will try the pursed lips and use oximeter more often. Spellcheck has changed that to odometer!
Hi, I have stage 3-4 emphysema and PAD. and yes I am a former smoker of 50 years. I also find walking for exercise wearing as it is quite hilly around where I live. I now use a tens machine and an exercise cycle indoors when the weather is wet or cold and take leisurely strolls when sunny. The pain in my legs have now diminished thankfully.
