New study shows why people gain weight as they get older.

Many people struggle to keep their weight in check as they get older. Now new research at Karolinska Institutet has uncovered why that is: Lipid turnover in the fat tissue decreases during ageing and makes it easier to gain weight, even if we don’t eat more or exercise less than before. The study is published in the journal Nature Medicine.

There, I knew it! Not my fault at all! 😁

Us men also start to get hairier too, in places that used to be smooth, hairless skin as we get older. Other existing hair also seems to get thicker, some of the hair in my beard and eyebrows are getting like tree trunks!

You have just reminded me of an important job I must do before Monday. The DVLA have sent me for a field eye test before they will renew my driving licence. I'm currently peering through my eyebrows like an old english sheep dog which could interfere with my field of view, so I'd better get the hedge cutters out.

I had to do the dvla one to get my licence after my trepanning. It's a doddle. They are like 60 watt bulbs as compared to the normal pinpricks

This is because of glaucoma, I have one every three years always a different place and different machine. This will be my 7th. The pinpricks vary from very bright to very dim. To be honest I find it quite stressful as the consequences of failing would have a dramatic effect on my lifestyle.

Don't let your beard get too long though! The man with the worlds longest beard tripped over it and broke his neck! x

in reply tohypercat54

He'd pretty soon get overtaken for the title then. 😉

No danger of that, I keep it trimmed, I'm not a Viking with it platted 😁

Before I go on, my husband has a beard. I read on one of those "click bait" sites that there are more germs in a man's beard than on a dog. Told my husband I wasn't kissing him til he shaved it off which was a bit mean because he's had a stroke and finds shaving difficult and painful (blush). Not really a problem since we are both in our 70s and not much kissing goes on these days. We need all our breath to keep going. :)

There are good 'germs' as well as bad ones. I have had a beard since I was a teenager only shaving it off the once, which lasted a whole week, but the shaving rash was so bad I could not shave anymore. I also felt rather naked without it. It has not affected my health and only get a chest infection perhaps once a year now, I doubt that it is true. What I will say is that, as a past smoker it must have really stunk like an old ashtray, even though I could not smell it myself at the time, being a smoker.

You were a trend-setter then because nowadays all the teenagers seem to have beards. I'd love to see my grandson's lovely face again.

Have you not heard of the bearded lady!

It can happen to us too.

Yes I have heard and seen. I now have furry shoulders and back. Pretty hard to shave your back, not that I would consider doing it. Strapping a razor to a stick and using a full length mirror is definitely not on the cards. Razor nicks on the shoulder blades and trying to stick on a band aid on them defials the imagination 😅

Wow. Next time I am told to lose weight by a medical professional I will say I can't help it - it's due to my lipid turnover. x

Just had 2 cream cakes ☺ because I'm one of the odd ones out and I keep losing weight. 😊

I am also one of the odd ones, it has taken me 3 years of stuffing myself silly, even when not hungry, to get from 7 stone up to a healthy weight of 11 stone.

I know what you mean I've struggled with my weight for a few years now and dropped down to under 6 stone. Felt terrible all the time but since being put on oxygen in December I've actually got upto just over 8 stone which is my normal weight 🙂 The doctor said I'd been burning so many calories struggling to breathe that I just couldn't put weight on, I feel so much better now though 🙂

I joked with 2 greys that he could have a couple of stones of mine as I have far too many but then I read your post and am so sorry I was so flippant sounding as it must be awful being so under weight. I'm glad you have gained weight and are feeling better 😀😘
