Shielding

Just received e-mail from Dept of Health & Social Care regarding Shielding ending 31st March with some guidance on protecting ourselves. I don't know about others but I don't think I will be changing anything until three to four weeks after I have had my second Jab, which the 12 weeks will be at the end of April. I will still be very cautious even after that. Having stuck with it this far I am prepared to carry on for another couple of months. How do others feel?

I agree Snackjack, I don’t feel inclined to just start going out again. It will feel quite strange and Pete and I will be wearing masks, social distancing, hand washing etc. It’s wise to be cautious. Xxx

I agree with you we do need to be cautious. Have a good day and take care 😊 Bernadette and Jack 🐕 xxxxxx

Yes, I don't think I will ever leave home again without hand sanitizer for occasions where you can't wash your hands, like opening shop doors, putting fuel in car at a garage, using ATM's etc and masks.

I agree I don't have my second jab until may so won't be risking it. Sassy is right we still need to be cautious. Have a good day and take care 😊 Bernadette and Jack 🐕 xxxxxx

I dont think they should stop shielding until they have completed their vaccination programm. I will still avoid crowds and stores and carry on as I have been for the last year.

Snackjack profile image
Snackjack in reply toPantani

I agree that is why I am still prepared to carry on shielding as I have been. Best wishes. xx

I too agree and will carry on shielding

I have my second jab on Wednesday, then I just want the travel restrictions lifted so that I can travel isolated in my campervan. 😉

Sounds like a good plan Don-1931. You will have to send us all lots of photos of your expeditions in your campervan so we can enjoy your travels with you. Take care xx

I’m seeing this as a very positive step I need to get back to normal it’s not doing me any good at all, so I will be following the rules but I’m not going to keep myself in I’m looking forward to seeing friends going out to shops and live my life normally, I am CEV been so since the beginning second jab very soon, I can’t live my life not working being isolated money is a issue also, my thinking is before the pandemic was the worse period off my life many hospital stays due to mental health, I’m going to live my life when possible and not worry to much about anything.

Snackjack profile image
Snackjack in reply toWanttobehapppy

We all have to do what we think is best for us , so sorry that you have had many hospital visits. My very best wishes to you and take care of yourself. xx

Wanttobehapppy profile image

Just to add I will be following the rules just not isolating myself

Snackjack profile image
Snackjack in reply toWanttobehapppy

Sounds like you are being very sensible, good luck. xx

madonbrew profile image
madonbrew in reply toWanttobehapppy

I will be similar. I’m getting to my mental limit not being able to see friends and go out. I’ll be careful and wear mask, gel hands, keep distance etc, but I feel so in need of people! I think any longer and my mental health will plummet. I’ve been noticing it this past week or so and know it’s not helping me being so isolated. Although I’ll probably just see people one to one, rather than in a group.

But people need to do what they feel safe with. I thankfully live in a little village where cases have been very few..other than in the nursing home I would have been working at if not for shielding!

Snackjack profile image
Snackjack in reply tomadonbrew

Yes initially a year ago I also felt isolated and when I do emerge it will just be on a one to one Social Distanced basis with a friend and even when I take a stage further with a few friends it will only be following Social Distancing. It helped me a lot when I found Health Unlocked, a new sort of community. I also started to volunteer (after DBS Check) with a local Befriending Volunteer Network who had people contacting them just wanting someone to talk too on the phone (face to face not allowed during the pandemic) as they felt lonely. I have found doing that rewarding. Local Hospice were doing Zoom sessions for people with breathing issues so I joined in that and also a Virtual Wellbeing Cafe Zoom sessions every Monday so I joined in that as well so I suppose I have just learned to live life differently over this past year. Mind you cannot wait to get my hair chopped off, I have only managed to trim the fringe, and to go out for meals with friends and visit friends - just keep reminding myself it will happen in time. We all have to take it at our own pace. Best wishes. xx

As the lockdown has affected your mental health then it makes sense to go out and feel some form of normality. You say you will follow the rules so you should be fine. I sincerely hope getting out and about lifts your mood and spirit. Take care and be safe. 😀👍

I totally agree. It’s good to know that others feel the same, so thanks for your post. In my opinion it would be completely unsafe to relax shielding until after the second jag is effective and even then with extreme caution😊

A tmely post Snackjack. I had my 2nd jab last Friday (I'm a volunteer with an NHS Trust) but I continue to be very careful especially restricting my outing to a minimum and even then avoiding crowds. It is certainly worrying when we here of rising cases in Europe . Thankfully here in the UK the roll out of vaccines seems to be playing a crucial part in reducing hospital admissions and deaths. I wish you well on your travels.

I’m with you snackpack. My husband is back at work because he had his second jab in February and is a key worker, so it’s back to trying to socially distance from each other when he gets home and making sure that everything is wiped clean. My next jab is scheduled for May. It’s going to be a long couple of months

ValentineX profile image
ValentineX

I received the same from Matt H. I have thought about it overnight and having spotted your post have come to the conclusion that the government must feel confident that we have a certain protection. My GPs advice prior to the jab was to take great care. I took too much care in shielding and have had to go on a fitness regime, as directed by my hospital consultant as I am losing too much muscle power. I am determined to get my confidence back and get some fresh air as from April Fools Day. The jab centre said to be careful for two weeks after the second jab/follow government recommendations but my understanding is that everyone will have to take forever as this is not going to go away. I am generally a rule breaker but have followed the rules (almost) to the tee but feel we have been given the green light...

Got my e mail as well! Will continue to be cautious_think covid is something we will be living with for the foreseeable future.

Stay safe ,well and happy .

Sensible advice which should be followed by most on here.

Watching a few transplant videos on Youtube one thing is common is the wearing of masks when out and about and avoiding crowds where possible and these are pre Covid stories.

Have you noticed the massive reduction in run of the mill “flu” outbreaks recently which i am convinced is due to both personal hygiene and socially distancing awareness.?

Stay safe and may your God be with you.. xx

Snackjack profile image
Snackjack in reply toMrbojangles

Yes like you I had noticed the reduction in the usual flu epedemic we usually have and also put it down to the personal hygiene, socially distance guidelines and a lot of us shielding. I really hope that once we are through this people still continue with improved personal hygiene measures. I for one will always have hand sanitizer with me for the occasions when hand washing facilities are not available. Best wishes and take care. xx

Hi, I am looking forward to being able to get out and about a bit. But, I like most of you will continue to take precautions and be careful. Good luck all. John

The government set arbitrary dates by statistics. Yes most will have a reduced risk. However there will still be a number within the statistics which will still be at risk. Personally I will do what I think is best for my wife and I. Until 30 days I will still be shielding to some extent....letter or no letter.

Hi snackjack I have had the email also,my 2nd jab due April so still going to be cautious for a few months .

Izb1 profile image

I have given myself until June, this is 4 weeks after my second jab. I will then start going out more but will keep my distance and hand washing etc. I wont be going abroad again for some time, so if I need a break will take it in the UK. Keep safe x

Jansybelle profile image

Totally agree, we have come this far so why chance it now, our second jabs are mid April so hoping to be okay three weeks after, as long as nothing changes! Then we'll go for a coffee and a toasted tea Cake!

skipwork profile image

I don't have to shield from lst April because I had my second jab in early February which is weeks ago now. I had an email from Matt Hancock saying from 1st April, no shielding. Cliff

Marlsboy profile image

Although it will be nice to see a few old friends again, there are problems for some which are overlooked. I totally rely on the internet for my shopping (I did before the pandemic). During shielding that meant I got priority for delivery slots, and never had to wait more than a week for supplies. Unfortunately, many more people now do their shopping online for convenience, and the priority will now disappear. This means that I may have to wait 3 weeks, if I can get a delivery slot at all. No one seems to consider the knock on effect.

you are doing the right thing, im doing the same and watch which way the figures are going, everybodys going to go mad when all restrictions are lifted and itll spread again

I will also be watching the figures as I am thinking along the same lines and the reason I will remain being very cautious.

Hi SnackJack I’m Not Allowed Jab I Was Partially Paralyzed On My Right Side And Smaller Leg And Arm Hand Plus inside My Body On Right Side By The Whooping Cough Vaccine And Went For COVID Jab Dr Looked Up Both And The Same Ingredients In Both He Said This May Well Do Damage To You So It’s A No You Can’t Have .. So sorry to hear about your reaction to Whooping Cough Vaccine, must have been awful for you. Obviously your GP is doing what is best for you. Does that apply to both the AstraZeneca and the Pfizer? I understood that they are very different types of vaccine. You have to do what you feel is best for you and be cautious. Take care and stay safe.
