Just wondered if anyone here has heard about any update, on the current shielding advice. As it stands it is due to finish on 21 February, their was supposed to be an update on all lockdown advice, next Monday the 15th, however it appears thats now going to be on the 22nd, which means if it continues myself and probably others will be going back to work on the 21st, and then if advice is to continue from the 22nd, we will have to leave work again after just one day of going back, considering the current lockdown is supposed to last until at least the end of March, you would think the government would have the sense and decency to put shielding people in the picture, so at least they could give their employers some notice as to where they stand, although having said that, this government doesn't really show much common sense, particularly where this pandemic is concerned !

Any new update for people shielding ?
I totally agree with what you are saying, I can't work but it must be annoying not knowing. Have a good day and take care 😊 Bernadette and Jack 🐕 xxxxxx
I totally agree with what you’re saying, but unfortunately letting us know anything in advance isn’t Boris’s strong point! ...was gonna write something else but I better not!!! Don’t want to make it a political post!!!! 😂It’s worth keeping an eye on the gov.U.K. official website, but we seem to hear on the news first before it gets put on there. The other option is emailing your local mp and asking them!
I imagine it’s a pain when you need to know for work and slightly anxiety provoking.
Hi, many here are busting a gut for something resembling normal life, most have been shielding continuously, I am on day 334. I think that if the latest mutation (similar to the South African one) starts to become prevalent, which may be likely, then expect shielding to continue. When the shielding advice was given at the beginning of January the latest mutation was unknown. It is still unknown just how this mutation affects the clinically, extremely vulnerable, even with mild to moderate symptoms after they have been vaccinated. The shielding advice is still just advice, not a law so it is a personal decision, although I appreciate that without the gov advice then decisions over work become so much harder regarding income. I expect the gov to leave any decision until the last minute, when they have more data.
I didn't even know their was another strain, I thought the latest one was the South African one, I had my first vaccine a couple of weeks ago, the astra zeneca, now we are told it may not be fully effective against the SA strain, that's bad enough, and if you're saying their is another one that is another worry. Although like you say shielding is government advice, I would be ok going to work, if it wasn't for the fact social distancing were I work is crap, in fact 2 days after I left work for this lockdown, 3 people went down with the virus, and another 30 had to self isolate for having symptoms, so I may have had a lucky escape then, so you can see my concern. I just wish the government would give people at least a weeks notice, it can't be that bloody difficult !
Unfortunately a lot can happen with this pandemic within a week so I suspect that is why the officials from all sides tend to leave advice etc to the last minute. Problem, like you say, is it makes life so difficult to organise.
The Kent strain (or UK strain) has mutated similar to the South African strain.
The problem I think is Information comes out at the very last minute and is NOT always accurate. It is the same In Scotland We hear so many arguments for shielding and against shielding.
And as you say rightly, it is a personal choice.
I like you have never been out the house since the end of January except for hospital appointments and doctors surgery for the jab.
Now being told that my pain in shoulder back and legs is because I am deconditioned, THIS after the Astley Ainsley pain management told the doctors that my pain was real and backed up by The Western General.
UNLESS they aid I should be decommissioned. who do you believe? same with COVID they just don`t know.
If I was told I didnt need to shield any more I certainly wouldn't take it on trust. I would be e.g. looking at the local figures for infection rates, look at how people were responding outdoors, i.e. wearing a mask (properly not like a dirty hanky they put into their pockets, and not under their chins etc). Why would we think it was suddenly safe if we were told we didnt have to shield any more? Best we rely on our own perceptions and a degree of shielding - certainly social distancing - was my way of life before the virus even happened.
Having said all this I know its different, and harder, for those who need to work - whole different set of considerations.
Just stick with what you have (ie in the most recent shielding letter) Its usually announced on BBC news site before we receive the letter so just keep an eye on things there, or on the .gov site:

Aside from anything else things may be different in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
In addition we all are waiting to hear when lockdown rules are going to be eased.
I usually get an email before my letter.
Nothing yet but I believe Welsh have now had theirs extended to end of March so I’m presuming we will follow ?
Here in Wales they told our shielders to stay home until April at the earliest.
That's ridiculous in England not letting you know until the last second!
I would assume yes shielding will be carrying on for a while yet unless told otherwise
The problem with our government, is they seem to follow Scotland and Wales about a month after the event, if their is just one thing I have noticed through the whole of all this is, Boris and his team do not seem to learn anything from their mistakes, it's happened throughout the whole pandemic, the latest being the extension of waiting times from 3 weeks to 12 weeks for the follow up virus jab, I think this will backfire on them massively, it only needs for to many people to start being infected with the virus after the first jab, because it started to wear off, and all hell will break loose.
I received a letter from the Welsh Government the other day extending the shielding to the 31st March (I am on the shielding list, classed as cev because of copd/emphysema) but don't know about England/Scotland/Northern Ireland shielding advice
