Fostair Advice

I have recently been diagnosed with underlying asthma, having developed breathing issues during lockdown. I have been prescribed Fostair 100/6 and have tried both the inhaler and NEXThaler options, both of which evoke side effects of hoarseness, dry mouth ulcers and mucus overproduction. Of the two, the inhaler with spacer tends to provide most effective relief of my symptoms although the NEXThaler is more convenient.

I would welcome comments from other users in relation to my experience thus far in terms of the products and side effects.

Welcome to the forum. When you’ve used an inhaler, you need to thoroughly ra se your mouth with water.thishelpswith th dry mouth and the hoarseness, also hope fully the mouth ulcers. I find excess mucus can be due to my asthma at times.

Hi and welcome, when I used powder inhalers I found them sticky to the back of my throat, always seemed to have a sore throat. I much prefer my Fostair inhaler with spacer - as a bonus we get 50% more of the medication than when not using a spacer. I still have a sip of water before inhaler ensuring nothing sticks as well as a really good mouth rinse and gargle afterwards. As for clearing the lung mucus many of us here take Carbocysteine to moisten it making it easier to clear. I have asthma. I hope this may help.

That is really useful. I will try drinking water before I take the medication as well as gargling after, as I currently do. Many thanks.

I have used Fostair and now take Relvar. Moving to Revlar was not due to side-effects, as I found very little from Fostair and the move to Relvar was because Fostair was not effective in controlloing my asthma.

Thanks for your insight.

I take the dry powder which as you say is the most convenient but get no side effects as you describe and I am on the higher dose.Make sure your technique is right. With dry powder medicines you have to give one really strong fast inhalation and hold for 10 seconds. Then wait for a few minutes before the second dose.

Hi i take Fostair 200 twice daily. I use a large spacer i always rinse mouth out but its caused me to lose my voice a lot. Will see how it goes, been taking couple of years now. Does cause thrush in mouth and throat too. I use an antibiotic liquid for that, only happens sometimes. My asthmas a lot better so outweighs the side effects for me. Karen xxx

Hi I take Fostair 100 Asthma/COPD overlap. Had 4 or 5 different inhailers the powdered ones could not get on with them at all. Been on Fostair since September 2020 find it works well with spacer had Thrush of the mouth once. But the Gargle after taking has sorted that ⏱

Hi Clemenzaa. I use the nexthaler of Fostair and have no problems at all? I have 200 micro grams. Two puffs twice a day. Do you wash your mouth out after using. This is quite important.
