New £800 fine for people who break lockdown rules by attending house parties.

What is the point of fining them. By the time the police turn up, hours later, they could all be possible infected, issued a fine and sent home.....to go on to infect others in the community. How about a little common sense.

There is talk of entrants into the country being put into hotels for ten days into quarantine at their expense. How about doing the same to theses party goers at their expense. There would be the financial penalty, paying the hotel (and guards) plus protecting the community through quarantine.

Or that just too simple an idea. Non payment would be the same as with any non payment of fine, prison. Drastic, yes, but potentially infecting others is totally unacceptable too.

Good idea 2g. Utterly selfish people

It was on the news and on bbc website earlier, mainly to stop the people reoffending. Better to have a deterrent than to let them walk and spread anyway. A good thing to be actioned and enforced.

I think it's a very good idea 2greys, but it's too sensible. It would require some work to achieve, then you would have the hotels saying we're not having our properties treated like prisons, we have standards to uphold, blah, blah blah. Then no doubt you would have the PC Brigade out shouting about civil liberties and human rights, never mind the rights of those who catch what is being spread by these useless articles.

What? The government to do a sensible approach that would actually deter selfish members of our society?! 🤣😂

But as said before can you imagine the protests outside of hotels the bad press and damage the business owners are left to deal with..

Not sure what the answer is? But I completely agree with you!

House parties of 14 ?

There are already (smaller) fines in place for these people? xx

in reply toknitter

I thought it said fines for parties more than 15 but even a gathering of that size I think is too much at this time. A permit to party with agreement to quarantine for 10 days after may help reduce the spread at least during winter months but even with that in place you can bet there will still be those who disregard the safety measures for the greater good of all.

£800 It should be more, i think they should be given a higher fine but they won't pay it anyway. As we all know many people have died and many more are dying, which breaks my heart. They couldn't be more selfish in my opinion. I dont think they should be given any treatment in hospital as they brought it on them selves. Should they not be charged with a crime like murder / attempted Murder/ GBH/ GBH with intent/ AOABH. As like many of you i have been shielding, but my shielding started in June 2019 when i ended up in hospital for nearly 6 months. I was never so happy to get home but then Covid hit, so i have just sat at home bored to tears but hey im still alive. Stay safe everyone

£800 fine. True, they could already be infected. But what other options are there? The £800 fine should deter others.

There is a very big flaw, one that is known and shared on social media. You do not pay the fixed penalty fine and allow it to go to court. In court the fine is made in line with the ability to pay, the £800 fine could go down to as little as £50. It is called playing the system.

I was going to say earlier that the people who arrange or go to these 'parties' don't give a fig for the law and will continue to do it as long as there's one to go to. As you say 2greys, the current system works for them not against.

These people are stupid, thoughtless, reckless, selfish, inconsiderate and they have broken a covid guideline law but they are not criminals in the conventional sense of the word. I don't think the courts want to put them in prison alongside hardened, habitual offenders, besides they haven't got the room. This in turn would create another huge problem. Why don't they turn one or two of the old, empty MOD sites into temporary living quarters, arrest them in situ and send them 'straight to jail' for quarantining with no chance to go home first to collect personal belongings etc. It might make a few of them think twice about repeating their stupidity especially if they lose jobs in the meantime.

What a joke, 394 let off any fines and all of them allowed to go home to potentially spread the virus within their communities after this super-spreader event. It is said 1 in 8 have the virus, so 400 dived by 8 = 50 infected quests spreading it to the rest.
