Hi I’m on 40mg predisolone for post viral inflammation causing a cough and breathlessness. The insomnia is bonkers! Has anyone’s doctors recommended any additional meds to reduce impact of insomnia such as night nurse?

I do understand what you’re coming from.when I’ve been on high doses,it’s been awful trying to sleep.

I’m on 20 at present,have a 17 day long Viral infection .

No body has ever suggested taking any thing for insomnia to me.

Perhaps you could ask the advice of the pharmacist?

I’m up at 5.45,so have taken pred in hope of better sleep tonight.

I’m sorry I can’t be of any more help.

Take care

Take them as early in the morning as possible, make sure you have some food in your stomach first. Try doing some exercise early evening as well. The side effect of insomnia is a right pain but you need to take the steroids to get well again. Doctors will not prescribe steroids unless there is an absolute need for them, make sure you finish the course.

Prednisolone renowned for that, I've not been prescribed any to help sleep while on prednisolone but have been prescribed previously Zopiclone, which is supposed to help you sleep through the night. I've only taken them once and I think sleep was ok.

For myself I find cetirizine antihistamine puts me to sleep no prob, taken at about 9pm and to bed by 10.30pm I sleep late the next day. Cetirizine has this affect on some people.

I've not remembered to try it last time on prednisolone, but I guess worth a try since its over the counter med (or on ebay or amazon).

As suggested take the prednisolone early in the morning with breakfast.

Hope you find something that works and you don't have to stay on that dose for too long.

Poor you Wireless. When I take them I set a gentle alarm for 5am, water, an oatcake and pred ready by the bed which helps for the following night time.

I do take antihistamine cetirazine (cheap ones from supermarket not tge expensive branded ones). At bad times I'll take a whole one but just to get me back on track half of one is plenty to make me drowsy enough to fall back asleep. They last 12 hours so I take at 7-8pm so I'm not drowsy in the morning.

You'd best ask at a pharmacist and also read the leaflet. Good luck. P

I'm on prednisilone as well. I tend to wake two or three times in the night. I found that my bedtime shot of whiskey helps!
