I have spent well over 30 years living the West side of London, so spent much time in Bushey Park and Richmond Park, I love watching the deer. Also love watching idiot parents who say to small children (especially in the rutting season) " do go and give this bread to the lovely deer over there". No understanding of what "wild" means, in connection with large animals.

I saw the same in nearby Dunham Massey park. Amazed more incidents don't happen , but maybe we just don't hear about them.

They are the most majestic creatures. I used to ride in a deer park that was used by Massey Ferguson to train their foreign drivers, as I was on a horse they would ignore us and we could get really close to them. I certainly would not want to be close to them in any other way, especially at this time of year xx Thank you BB for such a wonderful picture xx

Rutting season begins early autumn.

The stags challenge each other using their horns with the intention of taking control .

They then mate with as many females as possible and take control of the herd as they follow him around 🧑

Oh Blackbird8 you are treating us with this beautiful photograph πŸ“Έ of the Stag with his antlers sticking out with pride and telling his rivals that he means business! 🦌 I can't get over the height of those antlers-they look enormous and would put up a good battle. Is it called "locking horns"? Thank you so much for sharing. Enjoy your Sunday . 🐿🌈x

Blackbird8 profile image
Blackbird8β€’ in reply toSquirrelsHolt

Thankyou yes locking horns is the terminology used ..

Excusing my ignorance , I'm still amazed at their antlers, how magnificent they are and how majestic they look! Are they bone as in the same bones in their bodies or are they the same as hair? (I'm wanting to use the Just wondered if you knew)? 🐿🌈

Blackbird8 profile image
Blackbird8β€’ in reply toSquirrelsHolt

I'm not so much educated on them...but I think the antlers are made up of bone similar to the hoof like overgrown keloid which is how they shed and regrow ..

so would certainly not be the same as the skeletal bones but I dont know if I'm 100% on my assumption 😁

I'd say you are right. I would rather take your word than wade through all the www stuff. I am not a computer fan sometimes, lolπŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚.

Wow great pic of a beautiful animal. Have you seen them rutting? I spend a lot of time in Thetford forest but have never seen a deer as handsome as this one.

In the distance yes I would advise anyone to steer clear at rutting season πŸ’›πŸ§‘

Hi Blackbird. Beautiful photo. He's much handsomer than the deer we get round here. What antlers.

When I was a kid we fed the deer in Richmond Park. They came scrounging round our picnic. Seemed quite friendly.

Those antlers ! Great photo.

Do these deer keep their antlers or renew them every year?

JerryMaren profile image
JerryMarenβ€’ in reply toJaybird19

There antlers fall of in spring usully and they grow them back but there covered in velvet then just befor rutting season so like September ish the velvet comes of and theyr ready. Hope that makes sense πŸ˜‚

Blackbird8 profile image
Blackbird8β€’ in reply toJaybird19

Thankyou the antlers are shed yearly very early spring sometimes before as it gets warm here quite early...they grow back in time for rutting season which begins in early autumn...

They antlers are made up bone similar to the hoof like fingernails that's why they grow back so quick very thick and woody like a keloid skin scar πŸ’›

Jaybird19 profile image
Jaybird19

Its a lot of growth in a short time
