Hi, I took it for 2 years and then stopped due to increasing heartburn and gastric upset. I am registered with a group practice of GPs and, while two of them are quire happy with my decision, one of the other partners has tried hard to get me to start taking it again, as did a hospital consultant during a recent hospital stay. I had a Dexa scan last year for the first time. I'm wondering if your nurse prescribed it for you following test results or because of your medication.

After stopping the Alendronic Acid, I joined the Bone Health Forum (advised by a fellow lung forum member) and received a great deal of support and advice from the members there. Obviously you need to make your own decision but I understand how you feel about being laden with pills and inhalers. I have a daily check list to make sure that I haven't forgotten anything!

Best wishes Carole xxx

Oh bless you I have had 2wedge fractures of my vertibre now having another one the pain is unbelievable I just don't appreciate given pills I wanted the op where they put cement in your fractures to strengthen it but the reviews for this alendronate I looked on NHS website and only one person in 30 reviews were ok with it the others seemed to go through so many unwanted problems and most went off it ending their review saying never again made me a tad bit nervous early menopause at 35 then down hill for me after that 😭

I'm so sorry to learn that you have had and currently have fractures of your vertebrae. I do feel that you may get more help if you join the Bone Health forum, tell them of your problems and query your prescription for Alendronic Acid there. The members are a wealth of information and many have severe problems.

I can sympathise with you. I broke the side of my hand a few years ago then two years ago I went to the Dr with really bad back pain. I had had pain in my back a few years before. After this second back pain I was sent to physio who asked if I had ever had an x Ray which I hadn’t. I was sent and it was discovered I had two wedge fractures. I was then sent for a dexa scan and was told it was minus 5. 5. Which is quite bad. A couple of months after that I just bent my head and was in terrific pain. It was another fracture in my back . This one put me in hospital for twelve days as I couldn’t even walk to the loo. I came home and not long after I had a fracture in my foot. It was nothing compared to the last back fracture.I’m still suffering back pain and I don’t think it will ever go completely but I can now cope with it. I hope yours soon gets easier for you. I’m just hoping now I’m on injections and calcium tablets that I don’t get any more.

I take it as I have osteoporosis due to long term steroid use.

I take it on a Monday morning on an empty stomach....standing up with two full glasses of water. Have a shower, walk about a bit .

Don’t bend over, don’t lie down or eat for at least half an hour .

Tell your dentist in case you need tooth extractions .

No problems so far.

Thankyou yes I am waiting for sedation at the hospital for extractions

Hi Itsmeagain1 , 👋😃

Post transplant patients take this. But after I read up on it I made the decision not to. I simply take calcium and vitamin D. My doctor agreed to allow to be to that instead. I have regular tests to check my calcium levels and a Dexa scan yearly. xx 👋😊

I had the IV version as I couldn’t take the tablets with the other medication I was on. I had it three years running, apparently you can’t have it more than that, and had no real side effects after the initial 48 hours of ‘bone pain’.

I’ve been taking Alendronic for five years, and the latest details scan showed that the osteoporosis had neither got worse nor better. I don’t seem to get any side effects from taking it, but I don’t like having to wait half an hour for my breakfast!

I have been taking alendronic acid for about since I was 43 due to osteoporosis. I also have been taking calcium and vitamin d3 for even longer. I have always taken them on an empty stomach with a tall glass of water and waited at least 1/2 hour before eating. Keep upright after taking it. I haven't experienced any problems apart from feeling a little nauseous occasionally. I have been having dexa scans every 3 years and my bone density actually increased slightly and the idea is to strengthen your bones. My osteoporosis was discovered early so thankfully I have avoided fractures so far fingers crossed. My doctor, however took me off it for about 3 years because there was some evidence that sometimes it can make your bones too hard. I am now back on it because my bone density dropped a little during that time. Hope it works for you. By the way I'm now 64.

I took one tablet and was so sick that I couldn’t take any more. I’m now on injections which I give myself every day. My tummy is not good anyway so it doesn’t take much to upset it. I also take a calcium tablet twice a day.
