Good afternoon good people, please can anyone help! I recently, foolishly, let my omazeprole tablets run out and as a result suffered a rather severe acid reflux episode, despite sipping water constantly, drinking a few glasses of milk and even a couple of spoonfuls of gaviscon I couldn't rid myself of the horrible burning sensation in the back of my throat for the rest of the day and part of the next, does anyone have a remedy for this awful problem.

Acid reflux.
Hi I emphasise as the same thing happened to me. I found Rennies good and they did seem to stave off some of the reflux. Best thing is to see your pharmacist and ask for a few to tide you over. I did this and he was fine. I do use that chemist all the time though and we are on first name terms! x
Thank you very much, silly me,I have waggon loads of them i used to take them before the tablets came along, never gave them a thought, thanks again.
Hi i have been troubled with acid recently especialy at night when im in bed so i started to try nexium control tabs and for the first 2 days i took them i have had no problems its 1 a day and they last for24 hrs cost me £10 for 14 so ,so far so good .
Hi r00nst3r67, I am prescribed Esomoprozole which are exactly the same as over the counter Nexium so you could try them from the chemist until your Dr's surgery open again. Good luck, nothing worse that having heartburn/acid reflux with all the extra yummy food at this time of the year. Happy New Year.
Hi Jollj
I use bicarbonate of soda half teaspoon dissolved in warm water and sip find it works quickly hope you get rid of it as miserable
Thank you I wondered if that would work but a bit apprehensive to try but will give it a go should I have a further episode, thank you again.
I use Ranitidine which is the ingredient of Zantac. I get supermarket brands which are loads cheaper than Zantac, usually called 'Indigestion Tablets' in a small box. If you can't get them use Zantac
Great idea--my rantidine ran out & my pharmacist advised me that zantac 150 us the same thing & they work just as good.
In a pharmacy you can buy Ranitidine which are good, Nexium (Esomeprazole) you might find them useful and use Gaviscon advance alongside it.
Sipping warm water from the kettle.
Also almonds, a small handful after a meal.
I find if I take a probiotic capsule if I run out of omeprozole It helps a lot. And avoid fatty foods and spicy foods. And eat smaller meals. And tescos make fruity flavour antacids are better than the leading brand . Hope it helps jollj x
Thanks to all who have replied,I have plenty of options available now,I guess the best solution is not to run out of tablets but I do get the odd episode when I get a bit careless and eat the wrong things but as you all know the after effects are horrendous so it was that I needed help with, thank you all again.
Try ranitidine from pharmacy
Nexium are really good. You can buy them in any supermarket off the shelf by usual medications like paracetamol etc. Each tablet is 20mg, however you can take 2 a day even though it says 1a day. My doctor told me this and then prescribed 40mg Nexium for me. They are a bit expensive but will do the trick till you can reorder you own tablets.
Hi Jollj, presently I take famotidine( I’m in USA) but when that’s taking too long I’m all stocked up on Rolaidsand Alka Seltzer. Peppermint tea I’ve used in the past it helps when you don’t have anything else. I had a bad problem about 10 yrs ago whereI’d burp an it smelled like rotten eggs, my mom got me some round capsules at the store we call a pharmacy here and they had to be swallowed those things helped
Hi my husband takes Ranitidine for his reflux and when I get a back attack I take one. You can buy lower doses at the supermarkets and chemists.
I went on the FODMAP diet for IBS and discovred many people, particularly older people, are intolerant toonions. Just thinking of tour smelly burp. Once I stopped onions smelly flatulence stopped too!
if you have a juicer juice 1 full bunch of celery and drink the juice first thing in the morning.drink it at once . if you don't it oxidizes and is not as potent doing this will help produce hydrochloric acid in your stomach try it for 7 days goodluck
Omg I hate celery. Lol.
If you stop proton inhibitors, like omeprazole, then you will get rebound because the stomach has been trying to produce more acid to compensate for the photon inhibitor and leaps at the opportunity. This will gradually correct itself but, as you say, better not to run out. If you're getting low and might run out before you get a new prescription, it would be safe to reduce the dosage for a few days (say, one tablet every other day) - that should avoid the rebound effect.
If cost is not an issue you can buy over-the-counter Nexium - it's a PPI, as is Omeprazole. You can get 7 day supply some places.
If you want to reduce extra cost to just a few pence, the go-to for GPs other than PPIs is a H2 receptor blocker - Ranitidine - which is cheap OTC and will tide you over. You can get it just about anywhere that sells meds - ASDA ALDI Tesco Boots etc.
Failing that the calcium carbonate route - Rennies may help but I wouldn't be confident.
Jollj
Hi, Try Peptac on prescription through your GP, it's somewhat better than Gaviscon.
IKeith
Hi Holli,I too ran , went to my pharmacy and the boos gave me a few until d
Hi jollj,I too ran out ,I went to my pharmacy and she gave me some until the surgery opened a few days later.
Since I bought a large wedge pillow I have found it easier to breathe at night and it has also helped with the heartburn. Might be worth trying. I certainly wouldn't be without my wedge pillow. Xxx
Thank you very much,I have heard of a wedge pillow but never tried one,I have 3 stacked up,it's not ideal but I believe it helps, maybe the wedge would be better, thanks again
Oh gosh, I'm sorry to hear this Jollj! Sounds like you tried all the things that are usually supposed to help. Going forwards does you doctors surgery offer an online service at all? Might be worth looking into as I can now order the prescriptions through the online log in and pick up direct from my pharmacy a day or so later. Really good service and I've found that it's really helped me stay on track of things.
Try Bicarbonate of soda in warm water. No chemicals and refreshing too.
