Excited my amazon mail order Hosta starts are really taking off. They come in an envelope. So I potted them after soaking. I’ll plant in 4-6 weeks. I named each pot after a grandchild. Yes, I have that many. Now the kids are excited to win who’s does the best, lol.

I named the tiny one after my adult son. It’s the smallest. He said it figures!🤣🤣

I’m excited as these are an assortment. So it will be neat to see which Hosta each plant is!

Do as bkin suggests to control the slugsand leave a dish of beer - then collect them next morning either dead drunk or just plain dead . Grapefruit skins upside down attracts them too, but then you have to kill them . Dont use slug pellets as most will kill the birds too. Are the children going to be encouraged to have their own hosta in their garden or do you intend a hosta forest?

I can't wait to see them bloom and who wins. Have a lovely day and take care 😊 Bernadette xx xx 🌈

Watch out for the slugs Maricopa. If they were in my garden there would be nothing left the following morning. Got any slug pellets?

I have very few slugs, but yes I will be watching for sure!

They enjoy a drop of beer and may go for that as a preference :D ;)

I am trying to find an alternative to slug pellets for my beautiful hostas. Our puppy managed to find herself at the Vets very poorly and expensive. £600.00. Fortunately she survived and we got rid of the pellets.

You can get pet friendly ones that are biodegradable as well. Thanks fully your puppy was ok.

I have a couple of attractive hostas, variegated. The flowers aren’t very interesting, they are really foliage plants. I have slugs but interestingly they leave the hostas alone much preferring the dahlias and delphiniums.

I only had 1 hosta. It never blooms but it comes back larger every yr. it’s 15. The leaves are gigantic. These are a different assortment. I don’t think everyone will be huge. But I like the clean look. I wanted to fill in some flower beds to keep weeds under control. I live rural on acreage and staying home due to this virus I’ve been going crazy on the landscaping, lol.

Interested to see the difference between the varieties when they grow. A driend of mine has 11 grandchildren and we thought that was a big number- enough for a footie team - now you have enough for reserves too. xx

I do love hostas but so do the slugs and just wont leave them alone, I have loads in my garden and the battle is just to hard to grow them but I do love to see them. Lets us see them when grown x

I’ve only seen a couple slugs since I moved here 15+ yrs ago. It’s too hot in the summer & too cold in the winter.

I dont see too many until just before it rains, then it is like an army yuk!

Maricopa profile image

I think that’s probably why we don’t have slugs here too much. We get very little rain. We are dependent on a heavy winter snowfall in the mountains each winter. The spring and summer are desert hot.

Nice to get the seasons, it seems like the seasons run into one another all year now here in the UK., when younger I could put my winter wollies away for the summer, but can wear them all year round now. As for the deer, they too are lovely to see but can imagine them being a pest, luckily you have dogs to help with that x

I do have to fight the deer. Haha, they like to come and munch my plants. My two dogs run them off.
