Does anyone else struggle with breathlessness talking?

I have a rare lung cancer and lung disease aswell as cysts on both lungs aswell as multiple other things

I was wondering if other people experience difficulty talking sometimes i really struggle for breath to speak and it exhausts me trying other times i can talk quite well. The only answer google showed was its a end of life symptom but as far as im aware im not anywhere near that stage yet!

Dr Google AGAIN. Neither am I anywhere near end of life, not even on o2 yet. I mainly use texting on my mobile because talking is too much trouble, too tiring and I end up getting breathless.

Everyone suffers different things at any stage. So much so, a lot of doctors use the stage systems as a guide only!

I rushed to my doctor last night. I was in agony. My body, especially my feet were bloated and my weight went up by 10kgs over the space of 10hrs?

My point/advice is....with copd. You MUST try to control your anxiety as much you can!

My doctor told me last night, my fev1 was still estimated at about 48% (down from 51% 2 1/2 yrs ago). Multi factorial breathing problems was my problem!

My heart is working overtime to pump excess fluid from & around my body.

I have several potential life threatening issues. That (mr. mediator sir, is why I have little tirades on this site!) I need to release frustrated feelings about my existence.

Believe me! It has saved real people from suffering my angst!

I am a very BIG guy! 160kg plus. If I don't have an avenue for venting. I would explode. Our facilities especially mental health are slim and run down.

Mrsclh! I talk like I write. Lol

Breathing problems when talking, is! An end stage system. Supposedly! Get a physiotherapist to assess your Breathing. You my be like me. Not using your diaphragm properly.

Please, please. Don't give up!

Take care. Let us know how you get on! But. Please don't procrastinate too much. Fight!!!!

Thankyou for your reply i am having heart scan and other test in a few weeks as i too have had alot of excess fluid build up in my abdo and legs so when i see them about results i will mention the breathing and ask about diaphragm possibilty. I hope you get your symptoms under control.

As for the venting yes i agree we have to keep sane somehow lol

Thanks again

Hi Mrsclh - so sorry to hear of your diagnoses.

My lung probs are not the same as what you are dealing with but I can share from my own experience as below.

I am always breathless in any activity and so talking at the same time yes breathless. More noticeably so if airquality is poor / high humdity, excess temperatures, high pollen, windy etc.

As this is happening to you sometimes and not others I wonder if you can use your ventolin, salbutamol inhaler at those times, it can be that airways just need a bit of a helping hand at such times.

In early days before suitable medication established, I would find it was such an effort to talk, exhausting and the feeling of unable to convert in breath to oxygen in the lungs, often I would find if a person never heard me properly first time, I would say 'doesn't matter' as it was too much effort to repeat what I just said previously.

If things persist and become more frequent have a chat with your doctor for further help.

Best wishes to you.

Hi sorry to hear you too have problems but wow i can so relate to what you say, if people dont hear me 1st time.i just shake me head as if to say dont worry.

Well im not on any kind of meds for lungs at all, the only plan my consultant had was 3 lung function tests 3 months apart to then evaluate how far the progression of cancer is ( 2 of which have been cancelled due to covid) It was not ever mentiond that any meds could help,Very very frustrating i just presumed i cant be that bad in their eyes to warrent anything. Im going to question this now though thankyou.

Im just on pain meds for bone marrow cancer and other problems they dont know how to treat.

Thanks again

1/Ditch doctor Google, That will have you dead on your feet (the living dead)

2/ What does your GP and pulmonary Consultant say?

I occasionally run out of air when I talk, But my wife says I`m full of wind (and after 48 years, I think she knows )

Just slow down talking and take time to breath or catch breath.....

I am no doctor... Just a bloke who has the same symptoms as you.. enjoy living and as Spock says....."LIVE LONG AND PROSPER"

Hi thankyou for your reply, i wasnt using google for diagnosis i was just curious if it was normal but when i couldnt find any answers (apart from end stage rubbish) i thought i would ask people myself.

I havnt mentiond it to pulmonry consultant yet as wasnt too worried about just looking to see if others experience it. Although i did tell him last week im suffering more and cannot breathe when i lay down to which he has said my heart needs looking at so due echo and another test of some sort next week or 2.

Your no doctor no but drs are not allways as helpfull as we like its nice to have a response from someone living with symptoms even if it is just wind as your wife says

Best wishes for the future

Yes I find I can’t talk for to long as I get very breathless and start to cough. Still doesn’t stop me from doing it though especially during this lockdown.

Im glad you have kept talking through the lockdown. Im texting more now probably the lazy option but people are probably glad im not talking so much haha

My husband is always telling me to shut up as he says I choose the most inappropriate times to do it such as in the middle of a programme he is watching. He always says it jokingly but he means it lol.

My tumour in my oesophagus damaged the nerves to my vocal chords so one side is parallelised and radiotherapy damaged my lungs ,so now when i talk i am always breathless and find it very difficult to have long conversations also with taking salbutamol and fostair can make my voice sometimes even weaker so people sometimes cant hear me its very frustrating and depressing some days especially if i have to use the phone and talk to somebody new
