If they are water tablet's you tend to take them every day usually to your doctor stops are they furisomide yet always check with your doctor maybe ask for a phone call back.
Usually they are long term treatment as if you stop them the fluid retention will return. You need to discuss it with your doctor if you don’t think they are making any difference, but they take a while to work.
More to the point - what has caused the swollen ankles?
The water pills maybe for a long duration and can cause an imbalance in your electrolytes, but something must have caused the initial fluid retention. Don't want to be a pessimist and I certainly am not a doctor, but swollen ankles can indicate an imbalance in your heart mechanism.
I'd ask your doctor why they think your ankles have swollen and see if you need any further tests.
Important to recognise the cause - not just treat the effect.
