Hi Alice I don't take them but I've heard tell you have to plan your day around taking them so no outings for 30 minutes after you have taken them. I don't know if they take days to work, I guess they could.

I would definitely keep an eye on the left leg swelling and it it gets larger or starts to hurt you need to go back to the doc or phone 111 or A&E whatever you feel is right at the time.

Are you on blood pressure tablets? Sometimes these cause ankle and leg swelling.

Furosemide makes you need to urinate urgently soon after taking them. I don't know if you need to be taking them for a few days before they start to work though. There can be a number of reasons for water retention or for your feet and ankles to be swollen. Do you have reason to believe it's your heart? Didn't your doctor have any explanations about what could be causing the swelling? Hopefully the medication will start to work for you soon.

My sister has just started taking these and it took a day or 2 to start working. Her swollen painful legs have gone down quite a bit now. x

Hi try to sleep with your legs raised at night or whenever sitting, they need to be higher than your heart. It helps the fluid go back into the body. My hubby has the same problems , he's is caused by Edema. Deffinatly ask to be referred for tests to rule anything else out . Good luck

Yes I will ,thank you x

I too have swollen ankles, left more than right. I was on Furusomide 20 mg which didn’t work. They doubled it to 40mg for 4 weeks, still didn’t work. I am on a different drug now. Only taken it for a week but still no improvement. I am going to ring after Easter and see if they suggest anything else. I have AF amongst other things so I think it is to do with my heart. Sorry I can’t

Jus5 wanted to say you are not alone.

Hi Alice, I take x2 Bumetanide AM and x1 at lunch. I used to take Furesomide but changed because it wasn't working. If you have any spare try taking 2 tablets and don't forget to drink plenty of water/ fluids. Best to go back to your GP if no joy.

All the best.

Hi Alice, I take ferusemide and they do work. As I have been taking one tablet at breakfast for more than 6 yrs I don't remember how long before they begin to work. Pls don't take more than your doctor has prescribed as your kidneys and liver will be effected. Keep your feet up even 9 inches high will work. If they don't work after tomorrow go and see your GP. Good luck, Maximonkey

Doctor put me on furisomide(20mg) took time but started to work. Also reccomend putting feet up as much as possible. Because I ended up in hospital for other reasons I forgot to take tablets with me but consultant said the swelling wasn't that bad.so he left me off them until I went home. Did my ankles and legs good keeping legs up while in hospital the swelling went down. So thought I would leave tablets off for a while. But I started to move more and ankles started to swell again and the Doctor upped my dosage to 40mg boy I couldn't stop going rung the doctor said to take one and half tabs instead which has worked. Now got my slim ankles back.

Keep ankles elevated as much as possible. And before you go out not to much to drink. Just sips that way you wont be rushing around trying to find toilets. Mind you my husband maid a list of nearby toilets and because I sometimes have to use a wheelchair he bough me a Key for disabled toilets which has come in handy. The heat dosent help the swelling. Hope it all settles down for you but sit as much as possible with feet up.always makes my feet feel tingly was told that it was the water retention moving around. Not sure if tha was my hubby teasing me.

Hi Alice I was on 40mg Furosomide for years, I can't remember if they took a while to work but what I found was after about 1-2 hours I really weed then everything was normal for the rest of the day. About 5 months ago my doctor prescribed an additional 20mg to be taken at 5pm, that didn't really keep me up! Only trouble was I had to have a valve replaced and when in the anaesthetic room the consultant discovered my Potassium level was VERY low and my CO2 was very high, he and my surgeon decided they might not be able to waken me up after a 6 hour operation. I was kept in hospital and fed potassium drinks 3 times a day for a week. After my operation it was decided to put me on Co-Amilifruse which does not deplete potassium in the same way. I'm saying this just in case there is a problem with your heart and you need an op!
