I have severe brochiectasis Postural drainage 3 times a day for 45 minutes.

Although it clears my lungs I still get sputum being produced on the left lung which makes me cough even when sitting. Brown inhaler does not work. It is for Asthma. Aerobika is to loosen sputum. No good. It is loose anyway.

Please help.

Hi skipwork As you are doing everything you should but are still producing lots of sputum, it sounds as though you have an exacerbation which needs antibiotics to knock it on the head. If your GP knows which ab to give you, the correct dose and length of course ( usually 2 weeks) get in touch with them. If not, I suggest that you ring your consultant's secretary, explain and ask them to get the consultant to get in touch with your GP and also to let you know what they think.

I used to get chest infections with regularity since they put me on mucadine it has helped, but I still produce mucus and have a cough all the time I guess its something I have to live with.should never have smoked lol

Bronchiectasis isn’t linked to smoking so there’s no need to blame yourself. Obviously it doesn’t help to smoke, but it’s not a cause. I’ve got it despite never having smoked.

Do you use a nebulizer to help keep the lungs open? Or a percussion vest to help loosen the mucus?

With you producing so much mucus, have you looked at other reasons? I have to be careful eating dairy products. Other foods may cause an increase in mucus production. Also, environment can also be a factor (house mold, allergies, poor air quality) and even stress can effect you.

After retiring, moving to a newly built house in an area of better air quality, I have felt much better, and mucus production is much lower.

Perhaps u need to persevere as sounds like a steroid puffer? Is so,has antiflamatory effect and may help.

Hi.. Constantly bothered by mucous production.. Horrible! but something we have to learn to live with.

Heat makes it worse, wet or windy weather, in fact almost everything & anything. 🙄.. My regime is :2 x2 carbocisteine, followed by ventolin inhaler, nebulise nebusol(saline 7%) & 20 mins postural drainage. 3x azithromycin weekly.... Think it helps but who knows.

Good luck!! 👍

Many, many thanks.

Hi Skip work, I use a Aerobika device. It's adjustable and can be used Sitting up or laying down. I use this combined with air clearance exercise and I also take a hot shower and the steam seams to really help.

All the best.
