Cream Teas.

English cream teas will always please

No matter where you are.

But the place to get the very best

You might have to travel far

Devon and Cornwall lead the pack

There's no disputing that

But how they are put together

Results in endless chat

Do you put the cream on first

Our should it be the jam

Does that depend on what I like?

Or more likely where I am

The battle will go on and on

But the lesson that I teach

Is loosen up your belt a bit

I then have one of each.

I love scones full stop! I don't care if the jam or cream goes on first, but I bet there will be a reason for putting one or the other first. Our fellow posters are sure to give us their views or an explanation Don.

Cheers. 😀

Great :D - I will have the one in the picture on the right :P

Happy day to you Don, Midge and all. :D

Good morning Mr.D and as my parents were both Devonians I have to agree with you, in that a decent cream tea of world class quality , is to be found in Devon and Cornwall. Imagine my state of utter bliss, when faced with a traditional Ploughmans Lunch followed by a cream tea 😛😍!!

Terrific rhyme Mr.D which could be an ode to Cream Teas. The matter of jam or cream and which is placed on the scone first will always be argued I think. However ,there's also another debate on how a person pronounces the word Scone, lol😂😂! My answer is, say it how you will but where are my Scones, jam and cream followed by a hot cup of tea in a cup and saucer!

Hope you and Midge are coping with life and not getting too bored yet? 🐿🌈💕

Jam first Don and then the cream. That’s how I’ve always eaten my cream tea. Xxx😃😘💖🌈

in reply to sassy59

That’s my preference Carole, better cream mustachios than jam ones. 😉😘XX

Cream on top and Cornish clotted cream - that is why it looks more yellow than the Devon cream. Both are really good to eat but being Cornish I have to have them the ‘proper’ way!

You are doing it wrong

dear Don, dear Don.

Put the cream in a dish,

leave the jam in the jar,

cut the scone in two

and you will go far.

Just dip it in one,

and then the other

you don't have to waste time

trying to smother

one side of the scone

and then the other

Or you could shovel it up with a runcible spoon

it would be eaten up all too soon.

My daughter has been making us scones during our shielding and delivers them along with our shopping. My wife favours cream firts where I prefer jam first.🤗

Thank heavens I had a lovely scone with jam and cream made by my neighbour this week otherwise I might have had to lick my iPad!

Up in’t north we’re not so fussy although a ‘fat rascal’ from Bettys is a welcome treat at any time. Ever had one of those, Don?

Have a good day

in reply to Corin1950

Ooooer! You lucky you! My wife used to insist on visiting Bettys whenever we were anywhere near Harrowgate and once I had to go way off my planned route to go to Bettys in Illkley (with my hat on). Bettys were a bit too dainty for my taste, but I often found the waitresses in their black uniforms quite tasty. 😊 What was the "fat rascal"? We never got further down the menu than cream teas. 🙄xx

The original fat rascal dates back to the early 19th century in Yorkshire.

A widely recognised version of the fat rascal was introduced by Bettys Café Tea Rooms in North Yorkshire in 1983. This is a plump, fruity scone with a 'face' made from cherries and almonds based on a rock cake recipe, developed by Helen Frankel, then a buyer and marketing assistant at Bettys. Following its launch, the fat rascal quickly became Bettys’ best known and best-selling bakery product, selling over 375,000 per year. Bettys & Taylors of Harrogate own the registered trade mark for the name 'fat rascal'.

If you google fat rascal and Bettys you’ll see a picture of them and the various versions that have been added.

Oooh, you are rotten, Don! I LOVE a nice scone (pronounced as in throne) but haven't had one for ages. I haven't been able to buy flour since before the lock down otherwise would have a go at making some myself. For VE day, I ordered a box of scones and cakes from a lady down the road. The cakes were wonderful, but the scones were lacking.

Now you've set me off craving a decent scone - with cream first then the jam! I want one!!!!

Will I ever recover?

xx Moy

in reply to MoyB

I too love a nice scone (pronounced as in Don) and it's been quite a while since I had one. I'll just have to ait until I can get down to Devon again, but I'll have to be careful. I notice that in the picture it looks as though they have used scones with sultanas in them whereas in my book they should be plain. Certainly the cream must be first.😉xx

Great poem Don to stir up some chat. Love cream teas ever since my childhood hols to Devon and Cornwall. In the summer I often make scones on a Sunday and buy clotted cream to go with them. Sadly not at the mo as no family round for tea. My preference- jam first then load on as much clotted cream as you can Mmmmmmmmm x Anita

in reply to watergazer

That has to be the right way, you need a firm foundation of jam for that great pile of clotted cream. 😁. Of course, that still leaves the problem of whether it should be raspberry or strawberry jam. I think raspberry is a 'last resort' jam, strawberry being the traditional. Other types are totally out of the question. xx
