Tobacco industry tactics to circumvent and undermine the menthol cigarette ban in the UK.

Menthol cigarettes will be removed from shelves in the UK this Wednesday (20 May 2020), yet new research has found that tobacco companies failed to use the four-year phasing-in period (from 2016) to prepare for this week's ban. Instead they continued to sell and promote menthol products and to develop new products which circumvent the ban.

The University of Bath researchers behind the study—which is out today (Monday 18 May 0001 GMT) in the BMJ's Tobacco Control - argue this highlights how tobacco companies have exploited a delay in the ban to develop new products, keeping menthol products on the market for as long as possible, rather than phasing them out.

OMG !!! Just clicking on your link and reading several pages, it's a slap in the face for smokers because it proves the Cigarette industry cares about NOTHING other than filling it's own pockets!! Disgusting and they should be investigated by an independent body with everything on display. Nothing hidden or swept under the carpet. 🐿🌈💕

I totally agree with you. The tobacco industry is morally corrupt. It always has been and no doubt will continue to be so. They have very powerful lawyers who's job is solely to find loopholes in the laws, also to use delaying tactics, as has happened here. A four year delay, fours years of extra profits and four years to develop a strategy to continue exploiting nicotine addicts and create even more.

When I was finding reasons to stay smoke free years ago, I never realised the amount of toxins in cigarettes, among many - Arsenic !!

Yes hardly “cool as a mountain stream” which after 50+ years shows the power of advertising. (For the young ones this was a tv add strap line for a brand of menthol cigarettes called Consulate which I remember were very popular in the 60s.)

Clearly there is no morality in the tobacco industry but hardly surprising.

To be honest, I can remember smoking menthol cigarettes in my early teens and smoked so many on one day that they made me physically sick, I could not touch a menthol one after that, but I still carried on with the standard type, as sadly I was already hooked on nicotine by then anyway.

Yes, I used to smoke them in the early 70s. Foolishly thought I looked cool.
