My mum had COPD and AATD and dad had pneumonia, are me and two other sisters at risk of developing either? Especially COPD or AATD?

Hi BroEmi , 👋

Nice to meet you. 😀 As far as I know Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency is a genetic condition in other words, it is passed from parents to children through their genes. However, whether this always happens I don't know. I don't think anyone here can tell you for sure if you have inherited this condition or not. I am wondering if you could be tested? Here is a link from the Alpha 1 foundation about recommended testing.

As I do not have this condition is is hard for me to give any advice, but I hope this helps. I would recommend you speak to your gp about your concerns. Maybe they can point you in the right direction.

Take good care.

As far as I know copd is not hereditary. That is usually bought mainly from smoking. Someone may come on and give you more information

I have alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency, inherited from my parents, and now have under 40% of normal lung function. COPD can certainly be inherited in that way, it’s not always due to smoking. I’m always quite affronted by doctors who asked how much have you smoked? I have never had one single cigarette!

I to have Alpha1 inherited from my parents. Both parents must have it to pass it on to children. There are three main levels MZ, SZ and ZZ. MZ is mainly you are just a carrier whereas ZZ is the most serious causing issues with the liver and or lungs earlier in life. I have known my type SZ from tests carried out years ago. It’s not a death sentence as I’m on 20% lung function after 12 years. As others have said it’s important to get yourself tested considering your parents medical history.

Good luck and hope be with you

Yes you are at risk because Alpah one antitryipsin is hereditary. Please get yourself and family tested. If the test comes back posative you can start to protect your lungs. Avoid smoke cigarettes, bbq, bonfires, ect. I hope its negative 😷
