Hi I’m new here and had partial pneumothorax - waiting for CT scan/investigation.
I’m a teacher and head has told me not to go into school next week (to teach vulnerable and key worker children) but I haven’t read anywhere that I would qualify as being high risk.
To put into context, they discovered partial collapse at Christmas and requested CT scan and referral. Had blood test in Jan. Back to drs a couple of times to find results not sent to hospital so taken off waiting list. Back on week before last but thinking I won’t be seen until this is over.
Advice on taking headteachers advice please - would feel so guilty about not going in with everyone else!

The lungs once injured can take a long time to . recover. The damage can remain without affecting normal lung fuction. The lungs have some over capacity and you can have normal results. You had your injury not that long ago. Personally I feel that there is a degree of risk at the present time to returning to work. Your lung is in the process of recovering and I think an infection on top of that would make you high risk. Obviously I am not a doctor but I would advise you to speak with your occupational health team for more advice. I would in your situation would not go in.
Your head is being very considerate and you should take their advice. There is no need to feel guilty, by staying well now you will be better prepared for the future. And yes, I should think you are at risk. Keep well.
Welcome 😁. Our lungs are extremely sensitive and vulnerable especially when compromised. So I would not risk going into work if at all possible. Once damage is done, there is no guarantee of a full recovery. It's probably best to wait for the results of your tests and further deliberations with your consultant.
I was a teacher for twenty two years. After I became ill I had to give it up. Take good care.
Thanks Cas - I think I’m just dithering because I haven’t had any tests or seen anyone and they’ve cancelled all non-urgent cases so not likely to in the near future! I went back in after Christmas so haven’t had any time off - third lot of antibiotics just finished so maybe it’s time to teach remotely!
Groan.....😐 Not having the kids is no fun. BUT we need to do what's best for the time being. I have teacher friends who are also facing this prospect and parents who rather there be no lessons remote or otherwise. Do what is best for you. We have one shot at life. Let's not risk it.
Your Head is sensible. You probably should be gettingthe annual flu jab from now on therefore vulnerable. You cannot muck about with lungs. Don't feel badly, get properly well and strong for future
Thank you. Wishing the mix up hadn’t happened with the blood test and maybe I would have had a chance to see consultant by now. Slight worry about that outcome as well but trying to forget about that and get on with things.
Thank you everyone - there’s loads to do at home! I will be planning 4 lessons every day for the children to do, as well as being online for support all day. We also have been given admin and research as well as the normal day to day stuff so being at home won’t mean not working. I will however feel guilty if I’m not doing my share of being in school or giving up the Easter holidays.
