Coughing in the morning

Hi my Husband has had a really bad coughing session this morning, he rarely coughs during day/night time. I have taken him to GP who thinks his chest is okay, apparently it is difficult to make diagnosis, because of the crackling. It starts with white phlegm(sorry to be so graphic) then after a period of coughing and chocking light orange phlegm. Has anyone any thoughts on this, or any tips to improve /stop this , can you let me know please . After this he is exhausted , Thank you

Hello, In view of your husband's latest condition I would request a sputum sample pot from your doctor. Get your husband to spit into it and return to the surgery . When the sputum is analyzed it will show whatever bacteria is present and your doctor will prescribe the right antibiotic (if necessary). Regarding the cough he has it could be related to a number of reasons. It also could be a viral cough so antibiotics wouldn't work for it. You dont mention what long term health problem your husband has or if he is already on medication and under a consultant. Another visit to your GP would help to put both your minds at rest.

Hello thanks for your spot on reply, my Husband did a sputum test on Friday , though this was one of his better days so phlegm was white. I have just called Gp thank you for reminding me,the test was clear. The medical history is basically. Hospitalized in August and was treated for heart failure and atrial fibrillation, also mentioned there was an incidental trace of something on his lung, he was asked if he worked in asbestos, paints etc. Given scans that reflected this problem, but no treatment given...….7 months on we finally saw a cardiac consultant, who asked what our respiratory specialist thought, as we haven't got a respiratory consultant , he wanted to know why !.So do we !

Absolutely despairing as the urgent referral he gave us for "asbestos disease" ( totally devastated here ) was for May 1st 2020 , really thought after the neglect my Husband had received , an urgent referral would mean that.

Hence we are now going private on Monday , ironically to the consultant who had our urgent referral. Really upset to see him like this ,it has come as a huge shock. Hope that you are having a good day, many thanks for your reply .

I have a cough at the moment. Luckily chest is clear no crackling. Just annoying phelgm stuck in throat. Not had a cough in 4 years.

Blaming our hairdresser who was getting over a cold and left her with a viral cough.

There's a lot of viral coughs around at the moment. I have one of them. Airborne or from being in a crowd. Who knows? It's such a hacking cough and I'll be glad when it's gone..

Me too. My friend had it for about 6 weeks she kept going to gp who confirmed it was a viral cough. Need a real blast of cold crisp weather to kill of the bugs.

It is really awful, I have real sympathy for you. Further to our earlier chat, my local pals from local hospital called, said the person I was seeing on Monday with my Husband isn't specialist enough. They think I will be referred back to someone with asbestos specialism. They have now given me an NHS appt 16 February at another hospital , outside my local area, with a specialist in asbestos/industrial issues xx

If it's any consolation you will be seeing a specialist who understands asbestos issues.I hope your appointment goes well and let us know how you get on.
