Good Morning All John came out of hospital yesterday thank goodness. The pneumonia bug has gone but he is still very breathless, is this normal? He was in hospital for 10 days just getting up to go to the bathroom so I imagine he would be a lot weaker and breathless, but he is very down about it.

Morning Hun, This is very Normal after having pneumonia, it takes a long process to recover and to get back to "Normal". It Took me about 6 weeks in all, everyone is different with their recovery, he needs to take it all slowly and Build up his Strength, he must keep his Legs moving, sitting, he can move them up & Down, until he can stand to take steady slow Steps. His Inhalers & Meds will help, If he's on Oxygen that is also a big help. Just take things Slowly. Maybe he should apply for Rehab, It will work wonders. Best Wishes to you Both. XXXX C.
Thank you for reply and itโs good to know this is normal. Here in Spain, as you will remember they do not have Rehab. Hope your OK and getting stronger. Carole ๐๐
Hi Carole, I Had rehab quite often in Torrevieja, for my Hip Replacement in the Hospital. Then for Out patients at their Rehabilatation Department at the Hospital, they were amazing as they are here. Ask your Local GP Clinic.( I know these days there are English speaking Staff). My Daughter who lives there,(she is a Medical Translator), also had Rehab after her Breast Cancer then, when her Arm was damaged due to the Chemo, she had Rehab, she still has a weak less painful Arm, but can use it ok. Hope you Find the correct Rehab for John. Take Care Hun. Love Hugs, Hasta Pronto. xxxxx C.
Hi Carolina you were very lucky in Torrrvieja to have the opportunity of rehab. Here in Arboleas there is none. We do have a private clinic/gym where they have machines for rehab which John has been going to for the last couple of years and where I also went to when I had my hip replacement. Take care ๐๐๐๐
I was more breathless than usual after being discharged, for at least 2 weeks afterwards. It did gradually improve back to the point where it used to be after 4/5 weeks. But it has to be remembered we are all different, I was only in hospital for 60 hours (2 1/2 days) so it was nowhere near as serious an infection as John's. So I would say yes it is to be expected for him to be more breathless.
Some light physical exercise along with deep breathing exercises should help, along with lots of his favourite food to encourage his appetite/eating along with lots to drink. Keep him warm and away from other people's bugs as his immune system will also be compromised, at a low ebb.
Thank you 2-greys good to know this is normal. I have always thought having pneumonia you felt really ill, having a temperature etc. John did feel more breathless and for a couple of days had a pain when he breathed in. We were so surprised at the normal consultant appointment when he said John had pneumonia and kept him in. Hope you are feeling a lot better and back to work. Carole ๐๐
Thinking of you and John and sending best wishes to you both. It's good to know he's home and I hope things continue to improve for him . It does get you down when your health isn't great or your body doesn't behave how you want, so I really hope John starts to feel better soon ๐ค
Good morning Carole, I just want to wish John well with his recovery. Youโve had great replies from some whoโve had pneumonia so understand how John is feeling.
Lots of love and hugs to you both. Take care. Carole xxxx ๐๐๐
Glad that John''s now home.
Pneumonia can take a couple of months to completely recover from, sometimes longer.
Regarding Pulmonary Rehab, the BLF have a very good dvd, I think there's a link to it somewhere on this website. If you can't find it perhaps someone here could get the dvd (it may still be free) & send it to you. It has all the exercises that can be done on a PR course, both standing and sitting. It's really very very good. John could start with the sitting ones and gradually build up the repetitions to build strength and stamina.
Help him rebuild his immunity with eating healthy meals little and more often - isn't it fresh orange season in Spain? Vitamin C is so brilliant for healing from infection and boosting the immune system.
Back in the day I lived on a citrus farm in Libya, I used to lead the kids on daily scrumping sessions making sure we swept our footprints off the sand as we sneaked back home.
Best wishes, P
Thatโs a great idea peege why didnโt I think of that! I will send to my daughter in the UK and pick it up when I go there in a couple of weeks time. John does take high strength vitamin C and Magnesium to help his immune system. Unfortunately he has a large hiatus hernia and should not eat oranges or any other citrus fruit. Thank you again for your reply. Carole xx๐๐
Ah, shame about the hiatus hernia. I can't do citrus, vinegar, acids or animal fats either. Kiwis have way more vit c than citrus.
As a member you can order the dvd and have it sent to your daughter's. As Hacienda says, it's so important to keep moving, especially the legs. Good luck x
Tell him slowly slowly.
They donโt send you out of hospital because youโre fukkybetter,itโs because they canโt do anything for you medically.
Light meals etc etc.loads of fluids.
For now exercises in bed, just keep everything moving,( he doesnโt need a DVT..
Walk slowly at regular intervals.
Glad heโs home and on the mend. Hopefully he will get stronger as the days go by
Good morning pleased to hear that Johnn is home and lots better . I'm sure with the loving care he receives from you his breathing will start to improve. Have a lovely weekend and take care of yourselves ๐ค Bernadette xx
Hello Carole, ๐๐
I think it is very normal that John isn't quite where he'd like to be just yet. It will take time for him to regain his strength. Funnily, being in hospital we tend to lose muscle mass because we are not on our usual routine and are laid up. For every day we are unable to move , it takes a day or two of rehab to regain that lost strength, so just imagine ten days accumulation. I am so glad he is home. Please tell him he is doing great and it will get better.
Sending you love and hugs,
Cas xx ๐๐
Thank you Cas for your kind words and I know you are right. Hope you are continuing to improve and not getting so many side affects. Love Carole ๐๐
I had pneumonia 27 years ago when I was much younger and healthier and before being diagnosed with COPD. I couldnโt believe how long it took me to recover. We are all different but believe me it can take some time to recover.
I was in hospital four weeks ago for a week with pneumonia and severe dehydration. I am still very breathless and was told that because of my IPF it could take months to recover. I get very down about this !When I lived in Spain (Nerja) I didnt need rehab! Its very hilly and my flat was three floors up! I long for some of that healing sunshine now!
Thank you for your reply Aingeful. I must admit I didnโt realize it would take so long to get back to how he was. As he also has PF we thought the fibrosis had got worse but his X-ray showed that the lungs had not changed, so we shall just have to have patience and John must exercise every day to help get his breathing better.
Hoping he has a speedy recovery.
Excellent news ,the best news that he's home and infection free. I can vaguely remember having double pneumonia, being admitted into hospital and it took me probably 8/9weeks to feel anywhere like normal again. We are all so different and it makes a huge difference if you have someone caring for you, once you are allowed home. The advice everybody's given is what I would've suggested,so I wish John well but don't forget to take time for yourself every now and then!!๐๐
Thank you so much for your reply much appreciated. ๐
Not the easiest of things to recover from, time as they say, is a great healer. take things slowly for the best results. Hope all goes well and Christmas is something to enjoy. Best wishes to you both.
Hi tell him not to worry to much and be very confident he beat pneumonia! He will slowly up to six months get stronger and stronger. I was in hospital for pneumonia and caught tami flu whilst in there. Nineteen days in isolation but beat it . He is on the mend no problem ! Xx Mike
Thank you Mike after all the lovely replies I can see I was very naive to think John would be able to breath as well as he did before the pneumonia. So we must have patience. So glad you are better now. Thatโs what I was scared of, John catching other bugs while in there, although here in Spain there are only ever two people to a room and no large wards. Thanks again Carole x
