I am writing this post to celebrate 100 days of no smoking. Having known all dangers of smoking, I couldn't stop myself and becoming miserable in all senses.
I still remember the day when I quit cold turkey (because I smoked almost 20 cigarettes straight with just a thought of never having to smoke forever). Now I realise that it is the fear of 'Forever Quitting' which puts you down every time. Consistency is the key. You have to start somewhere and just keep going.
Since then I have started adding some new activities to keep myself busy. I am learning swimming now, reading books and most importantly becoming positive.
I hope to continue going ahead smoke-free and come back again when I finish 6 months, my next benchmark. Thanks for reading and wish me luck.

Good to hear you are going for it. I stopped my 60 a day habit 13 years ago and luckily never had one since. Have to confess though I have never been away from the GP Surgery since with different things. Never going to say smoking was good for me but perhaps it just masked all the symptoms.
shopman - I remember before I sopped for good, I stopped for three years, Then I developed a cough and it would not go away. OK I have COPD - but this was different. I wheeze cough zed, I coughed and chocked. - My wife still smoked at that time and I asked her for a puff of her cigarette - It help and helped and helped a lot.... When I saw my GP I told him what had happened - His answer was "Yes smoking can under certain circumstances calm ASTHMA cough but so could these. he meant steroids and he was right - I smoked for another 3 years then quit again over 20 years ago - This time I stuck to it.. I got a new lease of life - True now I am always at the doctors and just had a PET SCAN but I am 74 and age as well as smoking brings problems.. Smoking again would just make matters worse....Yes as I said, smoking did masc symptoms but now they would make matters worse.. Good luck and never be tempted.
Well done and keep it up, I quit cold turkey as well. Save the money up that you would have spent on ciggies and watch it mount up and quickly.
Yes, in a way your journey has just begun, the secret is avoiding all the temptations to re-start. Remember that secondhand smoke is still bad, although by now you should have found out just how disgusting the smell of cigarettes actually is and not want to share the same space alongside a smoker.
You will find everyone here will wish you luck to rid your body of this poison. Everyone I talk to says it is the most difficult thing to do to give up smoking and recognise your achievement. My mother and father both died of smoking related illnesses so I congratulate you for managing to come so far. You sound so positive by recognising the need to keep yourself occupied. Why not save the money you used to buy cigarettes? Keep it separate and at the end of the year use it for a little holiday or whatever you want. Keep us posted as to how you are doing as your experience will help others. Best of luck. Chrys
Well done. I promise you it's well worth all your effort. Ever day your body is improving. Look forward to hearing from you when you've completed 6 month target. 😀
When I was trying to give up years ago a colleague described giving up as the best present you could ever give yourself. That registered with me and helped me stick with it.
Great job! I love how we can get support here. Just don't ever light another cigarette and you'll stay quit forever. Its hard, I am still a little sad I don't smoke, but I am much happier that I am a non smoker. Its really nice to be a ex-smoker, welcome to the club!
Well done its_gs, you’ve done the best thing you can do to help your lungs. I gave up 10 years ago and immediately took up swimming. You will notice how much fitter you are in quite a short time.
I started learning to swim last month and Today I did 4 x 50m of the length (as I am out of UK and away from cold). I am now feeling my lung capacity improving.
Well done! The worst is over and PLEASE don't think you can now have a quick one for old times sake. A mate of mine tried it after seven years and ended back at square one.
I gave up cold Turkey 35 years ago. Well done! Treat yourself with the money,I did!! Because you will smell so much nicer, I bought myself nice perfume, scented soaps etc. I buy the organic types which don't irritate my lungs. Just dont ,whatever you do, turn to vapes!!
Well done it's not easy I know I tried everything under the sun from tablets to hypnosis but didn't work so as I too was smoking 20aday I decided to try just stopping a decided on a date and that was it 4years on still a recovering smoker lol as time passed I hated the smell and with the money I saved I started my fantastic new hobby .I collect of radios from 60 70s and 80s fantastic feeling that all my 22radios have come from stopping .My wife stopped a year later and puts £4 a day into a money jar and she has her hair done and goes to a nail bar for some nails stuck on so we are both happy bunnies only thing is I've put 2stone on and wife has gone up a dress size lol wish you luck I'm sure you'll succeed .
Good for you. now it gets easier with each day Cigarettes become none relevant. I gave up over 20 years ago as did my wife - I found it easy, Anne did not. But we got there.. All the best and don;t give in if tempted.
