What connects depression, anxiety, and PTSD?

In the largest study of its kind, researchers identify similarities in the brain activity of people with major depressive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder, and anxiety disorders.

Mental health disorders, although incredibly prevalent, remain poorly understood. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, almost 1 in 5 adults in the United States live with a mental illness. About half of the U.S. population will experience a mental health condition at some point in their life. Medication and talking therapies are useful for many people, but understanding the neurological roots of these conditions is proving challenging.

I have witnessed many patients in the Oncology Clinic with PTSD, especially with those that have Lung Cancer with the double whammy of being short of breath because of it.

2greys, I have a friend who is a psychologist who works as a therapist. She even did research when working on her Doctrine. Her patients with schizophrenia all smoke, chain smoke when they can. Several said that cigarretes were the only thing that stopped the voices. In research it was found nicotine ....does stop the voices. I thought that was interesting. But then we know nicotine is a drug, and extremely addictive.

Take care 2greys, stay well,

They are still researching it as a matter of fact.

What connects depression, anxiety & PTSD. “LIFE”. Lol....we’re born..we struggle in one respect or another. By the time we’re mature enough to have an acceptable percentage of commonsense & wisdom we’re at the age of marinating in formaldehyde! 😉. Then we check out! Such fun....and the cycle just keeps repeating itself one generation after another..simple

I think we should be more eco friendly when we leave. One does not have to be embalmed. It's very harmful to the earth. I enjoy the fact that I have earned the right to wear my dark glasses, at night, just like Leon Russell and Tom Petty!! It's all a matter of perception, and we never know....maybe someone like Vertex is researching a medication to cure.....us.

I choose to be a happy optimist and I have had my share of reasons why not be be.

Take care,

Interesting that half the U.S. population (about 50%) will experience a mental health condition at some time in their life. In the U.K. the figure bandied about is 1 in 4, or 25%. Yet some of the powers that be want to take the U.K. to be more in line with the U.S. model of running society. I think the comparative figures speak for themselves.

Yea, all the freedoms in the U.S. just make us crazier than you Brits.

Hi Ergendl....we have a larger population. And, I'd say that number is grossly over estimated. 50%....

Take care, happy weekend.

We tend to associate PTSD with ex service personnel and you can understand that with what they've been through. I think there are probably lots of civilians that have the condition with out even knowing.
