Just been diagnosed with pleurisy after 3 weeks of chest infection where I ended up in hospital.

Been put on prednisolone for 5 days (6 a day) and 2 weeks of yet another antibiotic doxycycline for 2 weeks, inhaler and co-codamol.

On my 2nd day, my question is how long before I can see an improvement and when can I expect pain to go? Didn’t realise this condition is so painful.

Also how did people manage to cough up pleghm; I’m really struggling to do this

Sorry you are so ill, there are some tablets that can be given to loosen mucus but with plueresy its often very painful to cough . Take things slowly I am sure you will start to feel more comfortable soon, this type of illness can take some time to clear & even then you may still be left a bit depleted energy wise. Every best wish for a good recovery and give yourself time. Take care

Hi Dirty Dancing, I have bronchiestasis, and I have been prescribed Carbocistine tablets to loosen the phlegm, along with drinking plenty of water.Check with your doctor/consultant to see if they are applicable for you.

Carbocysteine made me vomit so I stopped taking it. It was working too well really on reflection liquefying the mucus and expelling it by projectile vomiting with no warning!!!! Yuck 🗣

Hi Gladwyn,

That's exactly what happened to me. Projectile vomit is no joke is it?

Now I do the breathing cycle and use a flutter.

Your right it was awful. Too scared to go out incase it happened in a shop or cafe lol . I stopped taking it immediately lol. Now I don't do anything just try and cough it up don't have much luck with that . I've read about various gadgets such as the flutter but haven't tried any yet.

The breathing cycle works but takes practice. The flutter does help loosen the mucus. Drinking lots of decaff tea/coffee, water herbal teas and pineapple juice all help. Avoiding salt and added sugar help too.

I got my flutter on prescription from my gp.
