Rubbing hands with ethanol-based sanitizers should provide a formidable defense against infection from flu viruses, which can thrive and spread in saliva and mucus. But findings published this week in mSphere challenge that notion – and suggest that there’s room for improvement in this approach to hand hygiene.

I will have very clean, rough hands all winter, washed alot. And, antibacterial Purell or Honest, when I go out to shop and socialize....I love winter, but, flu is scary....I will also have my flu vaccine.
Thanks again for another informative comment, and article.
Stay well....take good care,

So it boils down to good old handwashing rather than a quick spritz of hand sanitiser to ward off germs such as those implicated in the flu virus. Old remedies often trump new...
A very interesting post 2greys, I distrust these hand sanitizers against bacteria, I use them just for cleansing my hands when I'm en route between home and outside, I don't think they are suitable for real 'germs'. But they are refreshing
Quite agree with this article 2G. A good long hand wash is far better. And nurses very frequently suffer from dermatitis from having to continually use the sanitiser.
Iwas always tsught to wash hands with soap and water . it is how you wash them that is important take time to wash between the fingers back and forth.
Many years ago I think I caugth a bug that I had been working with in a liquid suspension Had glasses which slipped down nose so pushed them back with finger ( should have used back of hand perhaps) washed hands thoroughly and went to lunch where glasses slipped down nose again so pushed them back again, using same finger and - ate my sandwiches. I think they work with disposable gloves now but hands still need washing thoroughly.
so try not to touch anything including your face when you are out.
